Rare Millésime Brut

Champagne, France

Rare Millésime 2013 expresses the house’s signature—blending minerality with a tropical twist—in two stages. Despite its initially reserved appearance, this vintage unfurls delicious notes of pastries and spices in a saline tension that is both noble and full-bodied.

Tasting Notes

TO THE EYE: INTENSELY BRIGHT
The effervescence of Rare Millésime 2013 is tinged with an intensely bright, light golden colour.

ON THE NOSE: FLORAL AND SPICED
The nose, at first subtle and clean, emerges in two stages combining tonicity and elegance. It all begins with the delicacy of white flowers, a hint of black tea and touches of citrus, kiwi and kumquat. Then, notes of lime blossom, green tea and fern give way to aromas of white fruits such as greengage plums. Touches of chestnut honey, sweet spices, vanilla and marzipan round off the wine’s rich bouquet.

ON THE PALATE: AROMATIC AND SMOKY
The two facets of Rare Millésime 2013 are confirmed in the mouth: smooth and vibrant, indulgent and dynamic. After hints of meringue, whipped cream and marzipan, kumquat, blood orange and kiwi then provide a refreshing tonicity. On the finish, the comforting texture of Rare Millésime 2013 appears as an aromatic and smoky indulgence punctuated by a freshness and a subtle bitterness. Rare Champagne’s iconic signature of tropic minerality is expressed differently in Rare Millésime 2013, extended by a plump and prolonged aftertaste.

  • Seafood platter
  • Roasted scallops, kumquats and pomegranate with coriander, accompanied by an apple, lemon and ginger jus
  • “Aguachile” seabass tartare, kiwi, cucumber
  • John Dory ceviche, pomegranate, olive oil and lemon
  • Lentil dahl, minted yogurt
  • Lemon sorbet

WEATHER: EXTREME
After a cold winter and spring punctuated by chaotic downpours, summer brought a mixture of sun, drought and thunderstorms. In September a chilly autumn exacerbated by strong winds, forced the harvest to begin late, in October.

  • Exclusive use of “the cuvée”
  • Blend: 70% Chardonnay & 30% Pinot Noir
  • 11 Crus, of which 7 are classified as Grand Crus and 3 are classified as Premier Crus
  • Chardonnay: Villers-Marmery, Vaudemanges, Verzy, Ambonnay, Avize, Chouilly, Oger, Montgueux
  • Pinot Noir: Verzy, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Tauxières
  • Full malolactic fermentation
  • Dosage : 9g/L
  • Time aged on lees: 8 years minimum
  • Time aged with a cork: 1 year minimum

  • 70% Chardonnay
  • 30% Pinot Noir

Rare Millésime 2012 is just as iconic as Rare Millésime 2002. In a warm yet precise and lively combination, the spiced aromas, floral accents and tropical notes create vivacious minerality. Like an ode to joy, its radiant personality shines through its exceptional length.

Tasting Notes

TO THE EYE: PALE GOLD
The pale gold colour of Rare Millésime 2012 gleams in the glass. Its bubbles are elegant and fine.

ON THE NOSE: RICH AND COMPLEX
The rich aromas of the first nose suggest delicious overtones of brioche, almond, mango, guava and bergamot. After a hint of heady florals (lilac), the nose develops spiced notes (honey, black tea, white pepper, incense and smoke).

ON THE PALATE: CONCENTRATED, FLAVOURFUL AND INFINITELY LONG
The delicious mouthfeel is tangy and juicy. Citrus fruits emerge through an extremely silky texture. The exceptional length of the saline, mineral finish seems infinite.

  • Veal and langoustine surf and turf tartare with a citrus veil, fresh marigolds, almond oil
  • Toasted pain de campagne, Saint-Malo Bordier butter, grated white Alba truffle
  • Milk-fed veal fillet, gnocchi, hazelnut and white truffle sabayon
  • Poached rhubarb on a bed of tangy yogurt, Sicilian pistachio ice cream

WEATHER: A HEAVENT-SENT SUMMER
There was a mixed start to 2012: the vintage looked to be challenging with winter and springtime frosts, rainfall and hailstorms. Temperatures rose suddenly in mid-July, bringing hot, dry weather - perfect conditions for ripening. Although the yield of the harvests was low, the quality was exceptional.

  • Blend: 70% Chardonnay & 30% Pinot Noir
  • Chardonnay: Villers Marmery, Vertus, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Chouilly, Avize
  • Pinot noir: Verzy, Ay, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Villedommange
  • Full malolactic fermentation
  • Dosage: 8g/l
  • Time aged on lees: 10 years minimum
  • Time aged following disgorgement: 6 months minimum

  • 70% Chardonnay
  • 30% Pinot Noir

The Rare Millésime 2008 has been crowned the "Best Champagne of the World" by the BEST WINE OF THE WORLD COMPETITION 2021.  It has also received 97 Points from WINE SPECTATOR and was a trophy winner at the INTERNATIONAL WINE CHALLENGE.  Enjoy now or can age until 2050 and beyond.

Tasting Notes

TO THE EYE: LIGHT GOLD
In a subtle, joyful effervescence, the intense crystalline golden robe evokes yellow diamonds.

ON THE NOSE: INFINITELY FLORAL AND MINERAL
The initial nose shines by the pure vivacity of this vintage. As Rare Millésime 2008 gradually warms in the glass, a vast range of orange blossom, hyacinth and white flowers is released. This leads to the delicacy of vanilla blossoms, a touch of fresh coconut, aromas of just ripe Williams pear and fresh almond, enhanced by notes of tangerine and blackcurrant buds. The second nose reveals the saline minerality, abundant and refined, an iodine-smoky harmony and a touch of liquorice.

ON THE PALATE: SPRINGLIKE AND PRECISE
On the palate the crispy, precise attack is followed by exuberant aromas of fresh pineapple, freshly cut and crisp, passion fruit, kiwi and coconut, nuanced with tangy citrus notes. These combine with plush spring-like flavours with unparalleled length. The finish, with remarkable saline and iodine notes, perpetuates the journey into an endless spring.

  • Oysters with ginger and lemon
  • Grilled sole with mint sabayon and preserved sweet peppers
  • Milk chocolate with mango and passion fruit

WEATHER: UNPREDICTABLE Following a beginning of a year that was mild, dull and rainy, the beautiful summer coincided with a perfectly mature harvest, continuing through the first two magnificent weeks of September. 2008 is definitely an exceptional year in Champagne.

  • 70% Chardonnay
  • 30% Pinot Noir

The Rare Millésime 2006 won a Gold medal from Decanter and a Grand Gold medal from Mundus Vini.  It was also a trophy winner at the International Wine Challenge, scoring 97 Points and a gold medal.

Tasting Notes

TO THE EYE: IRIDESCENT GREEN GOLD
Bearing witness to a sun-filled year, Rare Millésime 2006 glows with an iridescent yellow-green gold. Delicate, dynamic bubbles glisten in this flaxen brilliance.

ON THE NOSE: TROPICAL AND DISTINGUISHED
Rare Millésime 2006 first offers a generous honeyed and oriental nose. The fragrances of crisp mango, cocoa, coffee, tropical fruits, lend the vintage a sophisticated vitality. The scent of jasmine tea paves the way for a gradually emerging minerality. Aromas of dried apricot and pink peony foreshadow a slightly vegetal structure, where vanilla, yellow kiwi and Oriental spices bloom.

ON THE PALATE: INFINITELY RICH AND INVITING
In the exceptionally long finish hints of mocha and cocoa confirm the fine Rare Millésime 2006 minerality. Dried apricots, sweet spices, citron lime, accents of crisp honeyed pastries and Espelette pepper envelop the palate with an Oriental and smoky warmth. Testifying to its solar generosity, this depth underscores the wineʼs taut freshness and foreshadows a magnificent longevity.

  • Green asparagus with warm potato espuma
  • Grenadine of veal with langoustines

WEATHER: CONTRASTING Following a cold winter with abundant snowfall succeeded by spring thunderstorms, and a hot summer, in August, the temperatures cooled and heavy rains threatened the grapes' maturity. In September, the heat thankfully came back to encourage the harvest.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2025

"From a cool, late-ripening vintage that saw harvest extend into October—a year defined by relatively low temperatures yet enough sunshine—the 2013 Rare Millésime, released ahead of its 2012 counterpart, was disgorged at the end of 2023 with a dosage of nine grams per liter. It opens in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of white flowers, passion fruit, buttered toast and lemon oil, with a deft touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, revealing a crisp core of fruit that beautifully integrates its racy spine of acidity, enlivened by a pillowy mousse, culminating in a long, saline finish. Whereas the 2012 is more flamboyant and expressive, the 2013 is leaner, lighter structured, and slower to reveal its charms, promising to blossom further with additional bottle age. The blend follows the house approach: 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, with Montagne de Reims as the principal source."

"Originally a part of the legendary Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house, Rare is moving their Champagne Millésime to a new brand and wants it to stand alone. (Think Delamotte and Salon.) The 13th vintage for this cuvée, the 2013 Champagne Millésime is a blend of 70% Chardonnay with the rest Pinot Noir, with the majority of the blend coming from the Montagne de Reims Grand Cru and Premier Cru. A bright yellow hue, its aromatics are exquisite and well-balanced, with fresh notes of key lime, candied apple, fresh croissant dough, fresh pineapple, and honeysuckle. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with a rounded and supple texture and a pillowy mousse. It’s long on the palate and has a silky personality as well as a long, pristine finish. It has a fantastic balance of decadence and freshness, and I could drink this all day. It’s going to have a long drinking window. Drink 2024-2044 and beyond. Disgorged December 2022."

Plenty of apricot pastries, pears, brown butter, fennel and salted almonds, with some iodine. It’s silky on the palate, with soft and supple bubbles, while remaining fresh and on edge. 70% chardonnay and 30% pinot noir, from 11 cru villages mostly in Montagne de Reims with Côtes de Blancs. Disgorged December 2022. 9 g/L dosage. Drink or hold."

"One of the greatest hits from Rare Champagne, the 2012 Rare Millésime is produced from fruit harvested between September 10 and 26. Disgorged in November 2023 with a dosage of eight grams per liter, it is a rich and flamboyant wine that harnesses the season’s maturity to its advantage. It unfurls in the glass with a complex bouquet of crisp pear, freshly baked bread and white flowers, mingling with roasted pineapple, caramelized sugar and a deft touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it is full-bodied, muscular, ample and textural, with a simultaneously generous but elegant expression of fruit underpinned by succulent yet vibrant acidity and concluding with a long, saline finish tinged with toast. Concentrated but harmonious, it is dangerously drinkable now yet promises a long window of pleasure. The blend is the classic 70% Chardonnay (predominantly from Villers-Marmery) and 30% Pinot Noir."

"Best of Show. We haven’t featured three Champagnes for our Top 50 Best In Show in recent years (though this was the case in both our 2019 and 2020 DWWA competitions), but this blend of 70 per cent Chardonnay and 30 per cent Pinot Noir proved as hard to ignore as its two peers. The 2012 vintage pattern differed from those of 2008 or 2014 – but still demanded both patience and fortitude. April frosts were cruel this year, and for those whose vineyards jumped that hurdle, the cold spring weather that followed was unencouraging. Late summer, though was very dry, and just warm enough to create the nervy ripeness blenders love. You can almost smell that tension in the aromatic restraint of this Champagne, but keep looking and you’ll find much to relish, too, including flowers from the Chardonnay and root spice from the Pinot. Age mingles the two seamlessly. Once in the mouth, this is a Champagne of structure and proportion, and it’s here, too, that you can see the skill and restraint with which all the elements have been chamfered and jointed into place."

Régis Camus left this blend on lees for 10 years and then aged it for a year after disgorgement in November 2019 with a dosage of 10 g/l. Interesting how difficult it is for this wine to shed its relationship with Piper-Heidsieck on search engines.Brilliant pale coppery colour. Mmmm! So concentrated and heady with a huge array of aromas including, amazingly, coconut – but not in a tarty way. Masses of tense lime fruit aromas. Very dense nose. Lifted and refreshing and this seems much more youthful than12 years old. It does rather remind me of Dom Pérignon with its concentration and density but I don't suppose that comment will necessarily be welcome with the winemaker. It's just so electric in texture. Truly an exciting, luxurious champagne."

"The newly released 2008 Brut Cuvée Rare is very promising, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of citrus oil, crisp green apple, freshly baked bread, iodine and oyster shell, as well as some rather herbaceous characteristics that depress my score a little, even if I suspect that they will resolve with a bit more bottle age. Medium to full-bodied, incisive and tightly wound, if the 2006 vintage was gourmand and demonstrative, the 2008 is slower to show all its cards. Built around racy acids and complemented by a pillowy mousse, this rendition of Cuvée Rare will reward a few years more on cork."

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, while remaining fresh and surprisingly tight-knit at the core, concluding with a long and saline finish. There's sufficient structural tension here to promise more than a decade's graceful evolution, and although this is nicely balanced, it's a generous, sun kissed rendition of the Cuvée Rare that reflects the warm vintage.
