Luke Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Wahluke Slope AVA, Washington

I heard stories about him for years, saw him in the flesh a few times, and spoke to him only once. The true depth of a man’s character is often unknowable, but even one conversation was enough to convince me that Luke was an imitation of no one. He revealed himself slowly, like a freed wind emerging from the shadow of a mountain. Seemingly ordinary at first, but undeniably complex. Bold and determined, but unabashedly generous.

Tasting Notes

Named after the Wahluke Slope, LUKE Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas dominated by Marionberry and dark chocolate, accented by hints of mint and molasses. Supple, focused and expressive, layering coffee-accented blackberry and currant flavors with polished tannins and hints of cedar and smoke.

"The black currant and raspberry aromas are so rich, this wine tiptoes up to cassis territory. Its viscous texture makes the blueberry, poached pear and cinnamon flavors feel like they are careening down a backyard Slip 'N Slide. You can expect plush tannins, medium acidity and a touch of cedar on the finish."

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon entices with a spicy blend of crushed raspberries, offset by peppery herbs and hints of white smoke. It's silky and refined, with round textures and ripe red fruits that flow across a core of juicy acidity. It finishes long and staining, while maintaining a lovely energetic feel, leaving gently grippy tannins that frame the experience well. The 2021 will only require a short stay in the cellar to show at its best."

"This is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 2% Petite Verdot from Washington state. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, char and slight dark chocolate. Full bodied. Silky tannins. On the palate, black cherries, cassis, slight chocolate and a bit of spice. Some minty and bitter cherry notes on the finish. There is some depth here and it may improve a bit with short term cellaring. It is nice on its own, but seemed better with food. Of course, a burger would do, but it worked great with Felafel. Drink over the next five to eight years."

"This meaty powerhouse of a Cabernet Sauvignon packs bushels of blackberries and dried black cherries. It's fuller-bodied, with grippy tannins and elevated acidity. Decanting conjures up aromas and flavors of spicy red cedar wood, dark chocolate and a touch of lemony catmint to accompany the fruit."

"Critic's Choice. Fruit for this wine comes from Weinbau (Wahluke Slope) and Obelisco (Red Mountain) vineyards. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in all-used French oak, the aromas lead with notes of vanilla bean, dark cherry, plum, herb, and graphite. Full-feeling, palate-coating cherry flavors follow, showing roundness and richness. Vanilla notes accent the finish. There’s surprising freshness, along with sneaky structure."

Mostly old block Weinbau Vineyard fruit, this is immediately identifiable as Cabernet Sauvignon, with aromas of black currant, pink peppercorn and herb, with spice notes in the background. On the palate it's a big, bold wine, with a punch of dark fruit. The tannins give a light squeeze."

"Bright, dark ruby-red. Musky scents of black raspberry, cassis, dark chocolate and brown spices are accented by flowers and minty herbs. Richer, fuller and sweeter than the Companion blend, with its plusher texture giving it more early accessibility. Here, too, the tannins are suave and seamless. Lovely breadth and palate presence here, and no rough edges, even if the Merlot is a bit sweeter. Incidentally, the talented Peter Devison serves as consulting winemaker for LUKE Wines."

"A well-made wine that offers aromas of dusty red plum, blackberry and cassis, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a concentrated fruit core and touches of oak spices on the nose. Full-bodied, the palate is clean and correct with a well-structured mid-palate that offers firm tannins that are still tight in youth. The wine shows excellent value for the price, lingering long and delivering succulent black fruit flavors with a dusty essence on the finish. Nearly 10,000 cases produced. I’m impressed."
