Donnafugata Tancredi Dolce&Gabbana

Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicilia, Italy

DIALOGUE WITH CREATIVITY: The name Tancredi brings to mind one of the main characters in the novel The Leopard, an inexhaustible source of inspiration also for Dolce&Gabbana; in the novel and the film of the same name, Tancredi is the favourite nephew of the Prince of Salina because of his charm and his ability to adapt to change. Notable for its passionate and irrefutably Sicilian character, Tancredi was created in 1990 from what at that time was an innovative blend of a native and an international varietal. Dolce&Gabbana has developed the image of this “revolutionary” wine, paying homage to The Leopard, and in particular to the contrast between tradition and modernity that Tancredi embodies: and while the gold, blue and sinuous lines of Baroque inspiration celebrate the splendour of the aristocracy now in decline, the red, green and pointed geometric figures are a nod to the new revolutionary values that emerged in Sicily after the unification of Italy and laid the foundations for the contemporary history of the island.

Tasting Notes

An intense ruby red colour, it stands out for its broad bouquet with fruity notes of plums and blueberries; it also has spicy and balsamic hints of liquorice as well as sweet roasted notes like vanilla and tobacco. In the mouth it is enveloping with fine and integrated tannins; persistent finish.

Tancredi goes perfectly with red meat and game. Also excellent with tuna and oily fish. It can be uncorked at the table if served in large glasses with a wide mouth and good height. Serve at 18°C.

The 2021 growing season recorded 615 mm of rainfall, slightly less than the 645 mm average* for this area. Rainfall was concentrated in the winter, while the spring was dry; during this season, the delicate flowering and fruit set phases proceeded regularly. The entire vegetative production cycle was accompanied by careful work in the vineyard and therefore concluded regularly. The quantity of grapes produced was in line with the average for this area. The quality was fully in line with the company’s targets.

*Rainfall data is measured by SIAS, Servizio Informativo Agrometeorologico Siciliano, and based on precipitation recorded from 1 October to 30 September of the following year; the average is calculated on data going back to the 2003 harvest.

Nero d’Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between the middle of August and mid-September. Tannat was harvested on 1 and 2 September.

On arriving at the winery, the bunches were further sorted on the vibrating table and then selected using a next-generation destemmer which removes green and overripe grapes. Fermentation in steel with maceration on the skins at a controlled temperature. Ageing for 14 months in oak and at least 24 months in the bottle before release.

PRODUCTION AREA: Southwestern Sicily, on the Estate of the Municipality of Contessa Entellina and in other particularly suitable areas.
SOILS & CLIMATES: Prevalence of soils with altitude of 200 to 400 metres a.s.l., hilly orography and clay loam soils. Mild winters, dry and breezy summers with strong temperature variations between night and day.

Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola, Tannat.
Alcohol: 13.50% vol.
Total acidity: 5.2 g/l.

The vintage and 2017 harvest: the 2017 vintage was less rainier than average in this area. Temperatures registered between July and August were higher than seasonal average and this resulted in the ripening of all the varieties cultivated in the area 1-2 weeks earlier than usual. In this period of the summer, good temperature ranges between day and night have given healthy grapes with an excellent aromatic and phenolic maturation. The harvest of the grapes destined for Tancredi began with Nero d’Avola during the last decade of August followed by Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon in the first decade of September.

"The 2021 Dolce & Gabbana Trancredi is youthfully coiled, holding its power in reserve. It opens with a hauntingly dark bouquet of mentholated herbs, cocoa, gravel dust and dried black cherries. Elegant in style, it offers silken textures and depths of ripe red and black fruits, which gain tension as saline mineral tones and a bitter dark chocolate saturation amass toward the close. Tannic and staining, the 2021 finishes long and classically dry, leaving a resonance of blackberry and a hint of sage to linger. Currently wrapped up tight and in need of cellaring."

"The 2020 Dolce & Gabbana Tancredi seduces with a burst of black currants, wild blueberries, oak spice, mentholated herbs and cloves. This is pure and elegant in style with underlying power in reserve. Masses of ripe red and black fruits saturate, leaving a mineral staining as fine-grained tannins penetrate toward the close. The 2020 cleans up beautifully through the finish, structured and classically dry with a tart blackberry crunch and hints of pepper that linger on. The Trancedi is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d'Avola and Tannat that matured in 60% new French oak. Have patience with this understated beauty."

"I am surprised to see the rebranding of what is one of the protagonists in the Donnafugata portfolio with a reputation that has been carefully built over the years. This bottle, which previously saw a cream-colored label, has now been decked out with the colors and prints of one of Italy's most celebrated fashion designers. The 2019 Tancredi Dolce & Gabbana is a charming blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d'Avola, Tannat and a few other local red varieties. It ferments in steel but matures in barrique. This full-bodied red shows bolds aromas of blackberry, spice and baking chocolate. This vintage shows extra concentration. "

"The 2019 Tancredi Dolce & Gabbana is dark and intense, with an air of smoky crushed rocks and savory herbs that gives way to black currant and balsamic spice. Silky yet racy in style, this impresses further with depths of mineral-tinged red and black fruits that saturate. A web of fine-grained tannins mounts toward the close. It finishes dramatically long, structured and potent, with graphite nuances and a mentholated herbal freshness that helps to lift the experience. The Tancredi is going to need time, and a lot of it, yet it will be time well spent. It's a radiant beauty. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola and Tannat."

"The 2018 Tancredi Dolce & Gabbana is a deep purple color in the glass, with a dark and moody mix of plum sauce, black currants, grilled herbs and balsamic spice. It's silky-smooth and elegant with medium-bodied weight, getting depths of black and red wild berry fruits, hints of sour citrus and mocha. Fine tannins are left to linger through the incredibly long and lightly structured finale, as inner violet florals and hints of salted licorice taper off. The Tancredi is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Ner d'Avla and Tannat, and it is refined for a year in new barriques. It's a very pretty, yet deep, wine that needs a bit of cellaring to come fully into focus."
