Donnafugata Rosa Dolce&Gabbana

Sicilia DOC, Sicilia, Italy

A dialogue with creativity: Fascinated by its unmistakable colour, Dolce&Gabbana were particularly interested in producing a rosé, and the name Rosa was chosen to emphasise its unique personality. And just as Donnafugata has created an original blend of two Sicilian grape varieties, so Dolce&Gabbana has harnessed its creativity to tell the story of this prestigious wine, overseeing its image: the immediately recognisable graphics draw inspiration from the iconic Sicilian cart, synonymous all over the world with the island’s craftsmanship, culture and traditions.

Tasting Notes

A brilliant pale pink colour, it has a large bouquet with floral notes of violet, delicate fruity notes of grapefruit and redcurrant, and a citrus finish. Fragrant and savoury, it stands out for its minerality and persistence

Perfect as a pre-dinner drink or paired with raw fish, vegetarian dishes, and delicate meats. Serve at 10-12 °C.

Thanks to the consistent rainfall throughout the entire crop year and the absence of long periods of high temperatures in the summer season in western and eastern Sicily, conditions were ideal for the regular procedure of the vegetative production cycle; the quality of the grapes brought to the winery was completely in line with the company’s targets.

The Nocera grapes were harvested between the end of August and mid-September; the Nerello Mascalese grapes were harvested in the middle ten days of September.

The gentle pressing of the grapes is followed by the fermentation of the must in steel at a controlled temperature; the wine ages in tanks for three months and in the bottle for at least three months before release.

GRAPES AND PRODUCTION AREA:Rosa is the product of a blend of two red grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nocera. Nerello Mascalese is grown in eastern Sicily, on the northern slopes of Etna, on the Estate in the Municipality of Randazzo and in other particularly suitable areas; Nocera is grown on the Estate in the Municipality of Contessa Entellina and in other particularly suitable areas.

SOILS AND CLIMATE:
Nerello Mascalese: prevalence of soils with altitude of 600 to 750 m a.s.l., mountainous terrain and sandy soils of volcanic origin; continental climate with Mediterranean influences, characterised by cold winters and summers with strong temperature variations between night and day.
Nocera: prevalence of soils with altitude of 200 to 400 m a.s.l., hilly orography and clay loam soils; mild winters, dry and breezy summers with significant temperature variations between night and day.

In eastern Sicily the winter was mild and the spring regular with rainfall in line with seasonal averages. The highest temperatures recorded in June and mid-July were well supported by the vineyards thanks to the water reserves in the sandy volcanic soils. In western Sicily the 2024 growing season saw low rainfall and higher average temperatures; thanks to the water reserves available in the Estate’s reservoirs, between June and August supplementary irrigation was carried out in many of the Estate’s vineyards, supporting the vegetative production cycle. The quality of the grapes brought to the winery was perfectly in line with the company's targets.

The Nerello Mascalese grapes were harvested in the first ten days of September; Nocera was harvested in the second half of August.

On arriving at the winery, the bunches were transferred to a vibrating table for manual sorting; only perfectly intact grapes were destemmed and delicately crushed; the cold maceration of the grapes in must made it possible to bring out the aroma precursors as well as the distinctive colour of this rosé in all their glory. After fermentation at controlled temperature, the final blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nocera was produced; this was followed by two months of ageing in tanks and at least two months of ageing in the bottle before it was marketed.

Tasting Notes

Bright pale pink in color, it has a wide floral bouquet of jasmine and rose petals, with delicate fruity notes of peach and white-fleshed fruits. Of pleasant fragrance, minerality and finesse, it surprises with remarkable persistence.

The abundant rains recorded in May and the high temperatures in July, imposed scrupulous agronomic practices of integrated pest control and eco-sustainable management. Thanks to the great commitment in the vineyards, the vegetative production cycle concluded regularly, giving life to well-ripe grapes. The quantity of grapes produced on the Contessa Entellina estate, and especially on Etna, was lower than the average of recent years. The quality of the grapes brought to the cellar was perfectly in line with the winery objectives.

Nocera grapes have been harvested in the first ten days of September; Nerello Mascalese was harvested in the second half of September.

Upon arrival in the cellars, the clusters were transferred to a vibrating table for manual sorting; only the perfectly intact grapes were destemmed and delicately crushed; the cold maceration of the grapes in the must lasted 6-12 hours permitting to obtain the best extraction from the skins of all the aromatic precursors as well as the color that distinguishes this rosé. Once fermentation was completed, the Nerello Mascalese and Nocera were finally blended, followed by two months of aging in vats and at least 3 months of aging in the bottle before release.

GRAPES AND PRODUCTION AREA: Rosa is the fruit of an original blend of two red grape varieties, among the most representative of Sicilian viticulture: Nerello Mascalese and Nocera. Nerello Mascalese is grown on the volcanic soils on Etna among the municipalities of Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia; it expresses minerality and a refined floral component and lends itself very well to the production of rosé wines. Nocera is an ancient almost forgotten variety with a prestigious past. After years of experimentation, Donnafugata planted it in its hillside vineyards in the Contessa Entellina estate. Here Nocera reaches an ideal sugar maturation with a high level of acidity; it gives birth to a wine with a captivating fruity bouquet.

SOILS AND CLIMATE:
Etna: altitude from 650 to 750 m a.s.l. (2,100-2,500 ft); the area north of the volcano is generally characterized by lower rainfall than the averages of the other slopes of Etna; summers are cool, with strong temperature variations between day and night.
Contessa Entellina: altitude from 200 to 400 m a.s.l. (650-1,300 ft); hilly orography; mild winters, dry and windy summers with good temperature variations between day and night.

VINEYARD
On Etna: Etnean Alberello (bush vine) and VSP (Vertical Shoot Positioning) trained with spurred cordon pruning. The density is about 4.500 plants per hectare with yields of 4.5 - 6.5 tons per hectare (1.8 – 2.6 tons per acre).
In Contessa Entellina: VSP (Vertical Shoot Po-sitioning) training with spurred cordon pruning; planting density from 4,500 to 6,000 plants per hectare, with yields of 7.5 - 8.5 tons/ha (3.0 - 3.4 tons/acre).

Varietals: Nerello Mascalese and Nocera
Alcohol by Vol: 12.73%

"The 2024 Rosato Dolce & Gabbana Rosa is more savory than sweet, with an herbal thrust up front that gives way to crushed stone, lime zest and dried strawberry. It is soothingly round and pleasant within, washing across the palate with ripe orchard fruit and a saline mineral tinge. The 2024 finishes zesty and fresh, leaving nuances of candied citrus and an air of sage."

"Wonderfully spicy, the 2023 Rosa is a pretty pale pink color with a bouquet of lime-infused green apples and hints of confectionery spice. It opens with a pretty inner sweetness that gives way to vivid white pear and zests of orange. A core of vibrant acidity maintains fantastic energy within. This cleans up beautifully, crisp and refreshing with a salty flourish—a fantastic rendition of Donnafugata's Rosa, despite the difficulties of the vintage."

Ripe melon, Asian pear, mint and nuances of white smoke create an inviting bouquet. It’s round and elegant in feel, engulfing the palate in mineral-tinged orchard fruits and hints of chamomile.
