Bibi Graetz Casamatta Rosso

Toscana IGT, Tuscany

Like most of Bibi Graetz wines, the name is very evocative, “Casa-Matta”: the “Crazy-House”, Casamatta Rosso reflects the freshness, transparency and strength of the red fruit of Sangiovese variety. Entirely vinified in steel in order to preserve its vibrant and playful character.

Tasting Notes

This Casamatta reminds me as a wine can be easy-drinking and elegant at the same time. The freshness of the Sangiovese combined with the red fruits and the soft tannins creates one of my favorite Casamatta. I’ve been working for years to reach this kind of finesse.

The 2021 vintage will be remembered in Tuscany as a powerful one. The season started with a mild and rainy winter which permitted the accumulation of water reserves and an early budbreak. After some cooler temperatures in April, spring continued amicably as May brought enough rain to allow the water supply. Having vineyards in windy regions over 300m in altitude permitted the regular growth of the sprouts in spring and an even maturation in. Moreover, high temperatures and dry weather conditions in August helped the phenolic ripeness. The vines set a beautiful crop assisted by some rainfalls and cooler temperatures in September. The harvest started on September 20th and lasted through October 16th.

The fermentation is conducted in stainless steel tanks in order to maintain the style of the wine and it lasts for no more than a week with no maceration at the end of the process. The different vineyards are blended and age for 6 months in stainless steel tanks before the final bottling.

Casamatta grapes are sourced from the youngest vineyards, from the north of Florence to the south towards Siena.

Tasting Notes

This red is my favorite whenever I want a glass of wine. It is a pure transparent Sangiovese with plenty cherry and raspberry, nice acidity which helps with food and a round medium body with low tannins and a vibrant and surprising aftertaste.

2020 was an unusually warm and dry vintage. Winter was mild followed by a sunny spring with some sporadic rainy day. The beginning of flowering was recorded around June, with then a regular course favored by an ideal climate characterized by hot, dry and slightly windy days. As a result, an excellent fruit set was noted which led to a good architecture of the bunches. The harvest started later than usual and lasted till the late mid of October.

2019 was a balanced vintage in line with some of the best harvests we had in the last years.  Mild and temperate winter followed by a colder than usual spring with temperatures below seasonal averages.  The summer season was hot, very dry and stable. These factors allowed us to have very healthy grapes with a nice level of acidity and sugar.  The harvest started later than usual and lasted till the late mid of October.

2018 had been a very balanced vintage characterized by a cold winter and a temperate spring.  The vines had a full vegetative development before summer, due to the generous rains.  During the summer season the sunlight exposure was balanced and uniform.  The harvesting started by the end of September and lasted till mid of October.
