“The 2021 Sicilia Vittoria Frappato Bell'Assai can be categorized as one of these new contemporary wines that are fresh, brilliant, tonic and easy to drink. The Frappato grape shows a lot of energy and freshness over a lean-bodied texture. Cherry and cassis appear on the bouquet, along with green olive and caper flower. This unoaked wine ends on a fresh note. Production is 65,000 bottles.”

“One of the icon wines of Tuscany, the Isole e Olena 2019 Cepparello is all Sangiovese crafted by the loving hands of a winemaking legend, the great Paolo De Marchi (who finalized the sale of his beloved estate when this wine hit the market). Indeed, this wine opens a discussion on the future of this celebrated IGT Toscana, a wine that followed a strict vision and style under De Marchi. It is elegant and rich with fine aromas of black and purple fruit. It ferments in oak and ages in French barrique for 20 months, with one-third new oak. With 58,000 bottles released, this is a sure candidate for long cellar aging.”

This 100% Chardonnay exhales aromas of candied lemon, lemon oil, spring flowers, ripe orchard fruits and hints of pastry. The palate is coated and fleshy, rich and dense, with racy acids and a chalky, penetrating finish. Hide bottles for seven to eight years.”

“The Charles Heidsieck NV Brut Réserve is elaborated with 150 different wines from most of 60 crus. This is a blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier with 50% of reserve wines. Disgorged in 2022 with a dosage of nine grams per liter, it has a delicate bouquet with aromas of orchard fruit, apricot, warm biscuits, praline, pastry and lemon hints. Medium to full-bodied, creamy and fleshy, the palate is charming with lively acids and a chalky finish. It’s approachable now but also evolving with grace.”

“Brilliant straw. Ripe white fruit with the lift of spicy, savoury oak, hints of oatmeal and cut lemon. Focused and with just a touch of orange blossom. White fruit with just a whisper of oak done in a really hands-off way. Gentle, citrusy white-fruit palate with just a touch of creaminess, but the focus was clearly on maintaining freshness; something that is more and more in demand with increasing global warming. Drinking beautifully, but should become more interesting a couple of years down the line.”

“The weather in 2019 was beautiful, with a hot, even summer with no temperature spikes, continuing into September with high variation between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Fragrant potpourri and medicinal aromas are reminiscent of the 2006, while the textured palate features pure, ripe cherry with some damp earth and even an umami hint of mushroom, cut through by bright acidity. Lively and dimensional, it's still in its youthful phase but should be superb once it's had time to grow into itself.”

“The super intense 2018 Altura Máxima Malbec has notes of black olives, soy sauce, decayed violets, ripe fruit and exotic spices and woods, and it feels very different from the rest of the range. This is an exceptional wine from one of the highest commercial vineyards in the world, reaching 3,111 meters above sea level. The palate is full-bodied, and the wine is very intense and ripe at 14.5% alcohol. In 2018, they harvested earlier, the equivalent to the 1st of October in the Northern Hemisphere. It's full-bodied, round, large, concentrated and powerful, exceptional and different. 8,400 bottles were filled in August 2020 after spending 24 months in used barrels.”

“There is a new, still unpriced, red produced with the oldest vines in the property as an homage to the year the winery was created, the 2019 1831 Malbec. It's a heady and ripe Malbec at 14.9% alcohol from vines at 2,300 meters above sea level. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in Bordeaux barrels, 30% of them new, for 18 months. It's dark, intense and concentrated, very powerful, and as such, it has swallowed the oak and comes through as fruit-driven and juicy, with pungent flavors and very fine tannins. It's powerful but balanced; dare I say elegant? 6,500 bottles were filled in September 2021”

In the mouth, it’s sheer intensity and juice with heightened freshness and finely grained tannins that underline the lengthy palate which delivers good grip and flavor. A wine of excellent aging potential and longevity.”

“One of Chianti Classico’s most illustrious properties, Isole e Olena was established in 1956. After more than 45 years at the helm, Paolo de Marchi sold the estate last year to luxury company EPI, which also acquired Biondi Santi in 2016. This 2020 takes some time to reveal its tempting fragrance. Wafting flint, cardamom and pepper make way for early spring blossoms and red berries. It has a graceful flow along with a sumptuousness and succulence of raspberry and red plum. Fine powdery tannins frame it. A juicy follow up to the excellent 2019.”
