2019 Ricasoli CeniPrimo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG

James Suckling, James Suckling, January 2022

“This has an intensely perfumed nose of lavender, sandalwood, dried cherries, blueberries, creme de cassis, bay leaves, walnuts and stones. Full-bodied with polished, well-integrated tannins and a layered, silky and concentrated core of spiced and herbed fruit. Long. Intense. Fantastic already, but better in 2026.”

Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, June 2022

“Super spicy from the aromas through the finish, this red is sleek and taut. Features strawberry, currant, cherry and earth flavors, peppery spices and a kick of vanilla on the firm finish. Though delicate, there is no lack of intensity. Best from 2025 through 2042. From Italy.”

2017 Donnafugata Lighea

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, December 2018

“You absolutely cannot go wrong with a refreshing value white such as this. The 2017 Sicilia Lighea is a pure expression of the Zibibbo grape otherwise known as Muscat of Alexandria. Perfect for appetizers or finger foods, this dry white wine shows fragrant aromas of honey, star jasmine and summer peach. The finish is lean and crisp.”

2018 Donnafugata Lighea

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, October 2019

“The 2018 Sicilia Lighea is a pure expression of Sicily's beloved Zibibbo grape that is otherwise known as Muscat of Alexandria. This is a dry wine; however, there is just enough of that bright floral intensity to remind you of the fragrant nature of this grape that is often used to make dessert wines such as Passito di Pantelleria. The bouquet delivers jasmine and sweet honeysuckle with some soapy perfume notes at the back. This unoaked wine is crisp, lean and simple in terms of mouthfeel. Some 180,000 bottles were made.”

Ian D'Agata, Vinous, August 2019

“Vivid straw color. Varietally accurate aromas and flavors of greengage, orange blossom, cinnamon, nutmeg and fresh ginger. Juicy fresh and dense in the mouth with a multifaceted quality and a lingering orange liqueur element to the flavors of green fig and sweet spices. Closes long and brightly saline, with a nice spicy presence. A knockout, classically dry Zibibbo.”

Ian D'Agata, Vinous, August 2019

“Luminous straw. Enticing aromas of orange, tangerine nectar, figs and sweet spices with a white floral topnote. Juicy and lively, with a saline undercurrent to the fruit flavors. A very pretty wine, just slightly less concentrated and intense than some other recent, better, vintages, but this is still an outstanding example of a classically rendered Zibibbo that tastes classically dry.”

Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, January 2021

“Flavors of ripe nectarine and wild strawberry, candied almond and orange marmalade burst on the palate in this gorgeous sweetie. It's mouthcoating with its plush creaminess, but it shows a lovely backbone of mouthwatering acidity for balance, carrying the long finish of ripe fruit, cardamom and ginger spice. Drink now through 2030. 610 cases imported.”

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, April 2021

“This is one of the most celebrated classics to emerge from the entire appellation. The Barone Ricasoli 2018 Chianti Classico Brolio reveals balanced tones of red fruit, cassis, crushed stone, grilled herb and blue flowers. These aromas find balance and harmony with plenty of primary fruit and a good amount of snappy acidity. I could see a pairing with a platter of pecorino cheese wedges.”

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, September 2019

“This is a fun and easy-drinking wine for informal occasions with your favorite Italian dishes. The 2017 Chianti Classico Brolio is a mid-weight red that opens to a rich ruby color and bright garnet highlights. The bouquet is perfectly clean and pristine, something that can't always be said of entry-level Sangiovese. This wine has crossed all its T's and dotted all the I's. The bouquet is rich and forthcoming with wild berry, blackberry and plum. Fresh acidity pops in on the finish. The blend used here is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. A very generous 460,000 bottles were made, and this price point hits that value wine sweet spot.”
