“The 2012 BenMarco Cabernet Sauvignon is a ripe version of Cabernet with small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties and roasted aromas of charred wood, ripe plums, blackberries and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied, with the telltale texture of Cabernet, and has fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins and a licorice-tingled finish. A good, ripe Cabernet that is drinkable now, but should improve in bottle. Drink now-2018.”

“(a blend of 50% malbec, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 10% syrah, 10% tannat, 5% petit verdot and 5% bonarda): Good bright medium ruby. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, exotic spices, licorice and vanillin oak. Concentrated and high-pitched, with brisk acidity giving shape and definition to the lively flavors of blackberry, violet, cocoa powder and licorice. Has the suave yet serious tannic structure to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Very long on the aftertaste.”

“The one blended wine in the BenMarco line that I tasted was the 2014 BenMarco Expresivo, in this case it's 80% Malbec and 20% Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary, from a young vineyard that gives low yields. The fermentation was completely natural, without any added yeasts, and the élevage was extended to 14 months, also in used French oak barrels. There is more influence from the élevage here, with some smoky, toasty and spicy notes over the core of violets, cherries and just a tiny herbal twist. The palate shows some abundant fine-grained tannins that point at the need to give it some more time in bottle and enjoy it with some hearty food. 15,000 bottles were filled in September 2015.”

“Moderately saturated red-ruby. Musky aromas of redcurrant, plum, tobacco, mocha, herbs and menthol. Silky and suave on entry, then smooth in the middle, with moderate concentration and richness to the flavors of currant, dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and peppery herbs. Savory more than sweet and nicely aromatic on the lingering finish, which shows a good balance of fresh acidity and ripe, mounting tannins. Essentially a gentle style of cabernet and accessible already.”
