Isole e Olena Chianti Classico DOCG

Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany, Italy

The Chianti Classico is Isole e Olena’s most traditional wine. Produced for the first time in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a premium wine, an outstanding and modern reinterpretation of Chianti Classico.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and complex, while still eminently drinkable, this wine maintains its true character and authenticity over time.

The 2022 vintage began with a nice spring and the right quantity of rain, which didn’t create any special phytosanitary issue. Very cool temperatures at night and warm and ventilated days favoured an excellent and rapid flowering and fruit setting. From mid-June the summer became the protagonist, with constant high temperatures, which grew until mid-August. Luckily after the third week of the month the much-awaited rain arrived, guaranteeing a lowering of the temperature and allowing to arrive at an early harvest with healthy and ripe grapes.

Today it is produced with a high percentage of sangiovese, plus canaiolo. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain purity and freshness, it ages in big casks for 12 months plus 6 months in bottle.

The estate-owned vineyards are located in the San Donato in Poggio area, at an altitude of 300-480 meters on soils with a mixture of limestone, clay slates, marls and sandstone, typical of Chianti Classico. The exposition of the vineyards is generally south-southwest and the vine age ranges from 10 to 50 years.

ALCOHOL: 14.5%

The Chianti Classico DOCG is a blend of Sangiovese with Canaiolo, unique to Isole e Olena, which brings bright acidity, great balance and a long finish to this classic wine.

Tasting Notes

Crafted to capture the fruit flavors and bouquet of Chianti, this wine shows great balance and drinkability with a lively acidity to pair with a wide range of foods. Our goal is to produce an outstanding Chianti Classico which expresses the site and our traditional varieties, Sangiovese and Canaiolo.

The 2021 harvest started with difficulty, with very low temperatures early in the spring that caused a slow and irregular development of the shoots, and later constant rains that had a negative impact on the flowering and fruit setting. These two factors are responsible for the lower production that in the end was rather significant, though the quality was excellent. The summer was then hot and dry, but the good water reserves accumulated with the spring rain helped avoid further stress on the plants. After some light rain in August, September accompanied the harvest with hot days and very cool nights, allowing an optimal ripening characterised by a lively acidity and elegant and complex aromas.

Today it is produced with a high percentage of sangiovese, plus canaiolo and, sometimes, a touch of other red grapes varieties. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain purity and freshness, it ages in big casks for 12 months plus 6 months in bottle.

2020 commenced with a mild, dry winter. Temperatures dropped significantly in March and care was needed in the vineyard to prevent frost damage to the vines. Summer was dry and mild with the steady weather conditions until the end of August, when the region saw some bouts of rainfall. However, the weather calmed during September and the 2020 harvest gave excellent results both in terms of quality and quantity.

"The nose is a bakery in springtime, radiating aromas of freshly brewed coffee, vanilla bean, soil and sweet wild cherry. Strawberries and more cherries lead the way on the palate, before a finish where the coffee note evolves into an espresso corrected with sambuca."

"The 2022 Chianti Classico is an elegant, gracious wine. Silky tannins frame a core of bright red-toned fruit, rose petal, cinnamon and blood orange. The Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo. The Syrah, once one of founder Paolo De Marchi's quirky touches with this wine, is gone. The 2022 spent 12 months in cask."

"The last vintage crafted by former owner Paolo De Marchi, who sold the estate to French investment group EPI in June 2022. It was blended by Emanuele Reolon, who has assumed the role of technical director. This has a fragrant overture of pepper and raspberry with mint, flint and dried florals joining in. The palate is a colourful mix of sour red cherry and blackcurrant – all very crunchy. Sandy-textured tannins give a decisive backbone and tart, crisp acidity cuts through the density. Graphite and spicy green peppercorn to finish. I’ll be buying a few bottles to revisit over the next five years or so."

"As a young wine professional, I tasted and drank Chianti Classicos because they were readily available, but they were just another wine on a shelf or wine list. Today, these wines remain accessible, but their quality has significantly improved. The 2021 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico is one of the best in this all-important category. This wine reveals savory spices, authentic black olives, and early summer blackberries. It should be ideal with Vietnamese pork kebabs."

"Super-spicy Chianti fully focused on licorice root, restrained black cherries, fresh violets and meaty notes. It seems to be a serious effort, with graphite flavors allied to firm, chalky and chewy tannins, crisp acidity and a super-polished finish. Drinkable now, but can hold."

"The 2021 Chianti Classico is deceptive in its light color and medium-bodied structure. It possesses notable textural depth and supporting structure. This is such a pretty and expressive wine. Dried herbs, mint, spice and crushed red berry fruit are nicely drawn. Bright acids and floral overtones pull it all together."

"The Isole e Olena 2020 Chianti Classico opens to a dark ruby color and medium concentration. The bouquet offers pretty fruit aromas with dried cherry and raspberry. Those bright primary tones segue to crushed stone and potting soil. This playful, entry-level wine ends with a bright spot of sweet cherry."

"One of Chianti Classico’s most illustrious properties, Isole e Olena was established in 1956. After more than 45 years at the helm, Paolo de Marchi sold the estate last year to luxury company EPI, which also acquired Biondi Santi in 2016. This 2020 takes some time to reveal its tempting fragrance. Wafting flint, cardamom and pepper make way for early spring blossoms and red berries. It has a graceful flow along with a sumptuousness and succulence of raspberry and red plum. Fine powdery tannins frame it. A juicy follow up to the excellent 2019."
