“The 2014 Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigna Le Rocche is a very pretty wine. Gentle and lilting in the glass, the Riserva is decidedly understated in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, mint, blood orange, spice and rose petal all open with time in the glass. In 2014, the Rocche is a mid-weight wine. It can't match the towering depth of the vintages like 1999, 2001 or 2004, but it is very nicely done and certainly a step forward. Time in the glass brings out exotic spice and citrus notes to round things out.”

“Donnafugata's Tancredi is one of Sicily's most popular red wines, and it's easy to see why. The 2016 Tancredi is rich and soft at the same time, with a very pleasing texture that caresses the palate with dark fruit, spice and plum. The wine is mostly a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola, although some Tannat and other grapes are thrown in. It ages in oak for 14 months. This is a complete effort that boasts thick layering and volume. Some 89,000 bottles were made.”

The 2020 Roero Arneis is a great example of a wine that knocks out simplicity while maintaining a great sense of inner freshness and complexity. This was a great vintage for the popular Arneis white grape that shows a wide range of tropical perfumes with papaya, citrus and Williams pear. The wine also boasts rich inner fiber, good fruit weight and concentration. At this young stage, it is less defined by its inherent minerality and more defined by those exotic fruit tones. But you can expect the mineral tones to take on more importance a year or two from now.”
