2013 Crios Malbec

Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Apri 2014

“The 2013 Crios Malbec is aromatic and fresh, with notes of violets, ripe plums and a touch of brown sugar, quite showy, with the profile of a cool vintage, the sweet tannins of the Malbec, some sweet spicy flavors and good length. This is very good value. Drink now-2016.”

2011 Susana Balbo Late Harvest Torrontés

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, March 2013

“Bright lemon-yellow. Carnal aromas and flavors of apricot pit, candied lemon peel, lichee and honey are lifted by a bracing note of grapefruit. Dense and lush in the mouth but remains just short of unctuous thanks to a lemony edge and a whiff of jasmine. I'm not yet convinced that this utterly delicious wine equals the complexity of the 2010 version, but the finish is strong and very long.”

2011 Susana Balbo Late Harvest Torrontés

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, October 2012

“The 2011 Late Harvest Torrontes is produced from raisined grapes in Altamira with a small proportion raised in new French oak. The nose works a treat with lively white peach, apricot and honey aromas and then later, a hint of white chocolate. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry, with crisp, ripe apricot and peachy fruit and hints of passion fruit towards the harmonious finish. This is one of the best late harvest wines in Argentina. Excellent. Drink now-2017.”

2011 Susana Balbo Late Harvest Malbec

Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, April 2014

“The 2011 Signature Late Harvest Malbec is produced because at one point Susana went crazy about a late harvested Garnacha so she decided to do this with Malbec from Agrelo, left on the vine until the first freezing and fermented in barrel where the wine aged for two years. It has 80 grams residual sugar and 14% alcohol. It has notes of raisins, figs and dates, baked apples and cinnamon. The palate is medium-bodied, with good balance between sugar, acidity and alcohol, good persistence and freshness. It should work well with hard cheeses. Susana serves it with figs stuffed with blue cheese, and perhaps chocolate. I should try the combination next time. Drink now-2018.”

2013 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, February 2015

“Deep ruby-red. Plum, licorice, espresso and minerals on the nose, accented by violet, black pepper and a touch of herbs. Juicy, sweet and suave, offering noteworthy concentration to its dark berry and coffee bean flavors. Finishes with serious but harmonious tannins, a vibrant, palate-cleansing quality and lingering notes of minerals and mint. Has the balance and intensity to evolve gracefully in bottle.”

2013 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, August 2015

“The 2013 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Los Árboles in the district of Tunuyán in the Uco Valley. This is a cooler zone with some calcium carbonate in the soil where the grape ripens well that Balbo likes for Cabernet. The wine matured in 50% new French oak barriques (they have reduced the amount of new oak, which in the past reached 100%) with a medium toast in order to respect the fruit purity. This smells of ripe, very healthy grapes, cherries and fresh plums accented by hints of black pepper and a notable absence of green aromas. She dislikes the bell pepper aromas and prefers the fresher mint and actively searches for black pepper and avoids the overripe character. The palate is elegant, with some grip from the earthy tannins and has very good acidity and balance. A sleek, polished Cabernet with a little bit of a French accent. 60,000 bottles produced.”

2012 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, March 2014

“(includes 5% malbec; aged for 13 months in 80% French oak): Medium red-ruby. Aromas of currant, tobacco leaf, espresso and bitter chocolate. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, if a bit youthfully imploded today; not a fleshy or sweet style but boasts very good spine and thrust. Finishes classically dry, with lingering notes of cherry, raspberry and nutty oak. This may ultimately merit a higher score if time in bottle brings more pliancy.”

2012 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

Patricio Tapia, Wine & Spirits, June 2015

“Right on point, this is a textbook cabernet.  It grows at two vineyards, one in Agrelo, the other higher up in Altamira; the blend includes five percent malbec.  It’s a robust mouthful, with scents of cases and black pepper clearly delineated through a smooth and elegant finish.  This will benefit from several years in the cellar, or serve it now with grilled sausages.”

2012 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, April 2014

“The 2012 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Vista Flores and Altamira in the Uco Valley blended with 5% Malbec from Altamira. 20% of the wine is barrel-fermented with punching down and has medium intensity, with subtle aromas, and is a little closed. It requires time in the glass and some swirling around to reveal notes of red and black fruits. It has a medium-bodied palate where the smoky flavors of the wood and the peppermint are well-blended and the fine-grained tannins are in good balance with the acidity. This is a balanced, ripe Cabernet. Drink now-2019.”

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, February 2015

“Deep red-ruby. Rather claret-like aromas of plum, blackberry, mocha, licorice and chocolate. Supple, juicy and dry, with berry flavors complicated by licorice and game. This is serious juice for fifteen bucks. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a hint of herbs.”

2013 Susana Balbo Brioso

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, March 2016

“(from estate vines on clay soil adjacent to the winery; aged in 100% new oak): Bright red-ruby. Black cherry, dark berry, tobacco and spice aromas are lifted by an alluring floral topnote. Sappy, concentrated and energetic, offering terrific inner-mouth aromatic lift to its smooth currant and tobacco flavors, with the sexy French oak element in harmony with the wine's fruit. This very smooth wine shows greater sweetness than the Signature Cabernet. Finishes firm and long, with high-quality tannins and terrific lingering fruit. This high-density vineyard features 8,000 vines per hectare; Susana Balbo noted that production is around one kilo of grapes per vine from just two or three bunches. The pH here is a moderate 3.55, and one can see this in the tension of the tannins.”

2012 Susana Balbo Brioso

“Dark red-ruby. Peppery dark fruits, black tea, cedar and fresh herbs on the vibrant nose. Densely packed and extremely backward, conveying an impression of sappy energy to its urgent dark berry, black tea and pepper flavors. This began quite tight but really exploded in the glass with aeration, revealing terrific purity of fruit perfectly framed by ripe acidity. Finishes broad and horizontal, with ripe tannins and excellent grip. I'd hold this one for a few years, or give it a couple hours in a decanter if you can't wait.”
