Tiraki Pinot Noir

Marlborough, New Zealand

Tasting Notes

The 2024 Tiraki Pinot Noir is bright, expressive, and full of charm. Bursting with juicy red fruits like cherry, raspberry, and doris plum, the nose is lifted by floral hints of violet and a touch of cocoa. The palate is silky and smooth, with layers of red fruit, subtle baking spice, and a gentle earthy note that adds just the right amount of intrigue.

Fine, supple tannins, a signature of our Southern Valleys site, wrap it all up nicely, leading to a fresh, elegant finish.

Delicious now, but with enough structure to age gracefully if you can resist it.

Our Pinot Noir is the perfect match for pizza, rich ragù, or charcoal-grilled lamb. But wine isn’t just something you drink, it’s part of the story. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, it’s always better with a bottle in hand.

The 2024 vintage reflects a challenging yet rewarding growing season. Spring frosts and cool weather during flowering led to extremely low yields in the Pinot Noir block, but these conditions ultimately resulted in fruit of exceptional concentration. A dry summer followed, with the lowest rainfall recorded between September and March since records began, contributing to the development of ripe, vibrant fruit. Harvest commenced earlier than usual, starting on the 6th of March, and finished with the last clone picked on the 19th of March.

Hand-picked fruit was carefully sorted, with the majority destemmed and fermented in small open-top fermenters. Each clone was vinified separately to preserve its unique character, with one fermenter of Clone 5 undergoing 100% whole bunch fermentation to bring freshness and aromatic lift. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered to maintain purity and texture.

Fruit sourced from the clay rich soils of Longfield Farm’s Hill Block on the edge of the Southern Valleys of Marlborough. Vine age 11-13 years. Clone 5, 667, 777, 115 and 943. Organically farmed since 2023.

Perfect with butterflied lamb leg over charcoal or braised beef shin ragu.

The 2023 vintage turned out to be one of great quality! Early season rain threatened to make it tricky however February and March remained dry and allowed us to pick fruit in prime condition and optimal ripeness levels. Temperatures throughout ripening were moderate and allowed for a longer ripening period giving us fruit with great flavours and concentration. Picking commenced on the 16th of March with the last clone picked on the 23rd of March.

The fruit was hand picked with the majority being destemmed and fermented in small open top fermenters. Each of the clones were fermented separately with the Clone 5 ferment including 20% whole bunches to add freshness and vibrancy to the wine. Aged in French oak for 12 months 25% of which was new. No fining or filtration prior to bottling.

Fruit sourced from the clay rich soils of Longfield Farm’s Hill Block on the edge of the Southern Valleys of Marlborough. Vine age 10 years. Clone 5, 115 and 943.

"Precise, vivid and chiseled, this shows red cherries, smoke and hints of gunpowder on the nose, following through to a medium body with fine tannins. Well-made and textural with bright fruit in the lively finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

"Marlborough is primarily known for its tart and tropical Sauvignon Blanc, but this beloved New Zealand region also grows some great Pinot Noir. This bottle from Tiraki pops with bright cherry and raspberry notes. There are also subtle hints of cocoa and spices from 12 months aging in French oak. The palate has a juicy fruit core framed by drying tannins and present acidity."
