M. Chapoutier Les Greffieux

AOP Hermitage, Rhône, France

Tasting Notes

Colour: steady garnet red.
Nose: small black fruits, ink and black pepper.
Palate: powerful tannins, liquorice. According to the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years, indeed from 50 to 75 years.

Grilled and Roasted Red Meats, including lamb beef or pork. Hearty vegetarian stews and casseroles also pair well.

Hand-harvesting at maturity.

The harvest, totally destemmed, is vinified in cement vat. A long maceration allows a gentle tannin extraction. Only the free-run juice is used. The wine is aged in barrel: a third in new casks and the other part in casks having matured wine once or twice before. Ageing lasts between14 and 18 months. The clarification is natural and the wine is unfined.

The wine comes from the Greffieux situated at the foot of the Hermitage hill. The soil is made up with glacial alluvial deposit terrace composed of shingles and clay.

Varietal: 100% Syrah
Certifications: Organic/Biodynamic

"Ripe red and black fruits, roasted herbs, roasted meats, graphite, and chocolate notes emerge from the 2022 Ermitage Les Greffieux. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has a rich, textured mouthfeel, plenty of ripe tannins, and beautiful overall balance. Coming from deeper soils on the lower slopes of Hermitage, the 2022 was 90% destemmed and spent 18 months in a mix of puncheons and demi-muids, with 15% being new. Drink 2025-2045."

"Wild dark berries, dark cherries, spices, rose and lilac mingled with lovely peppery notes introduce the 2022 Ermitage Les Greffieux, a dense and concentrated, full-bodied and structured wine with a fleshy core of fruit, a harmonious, balanced palate and a long, mineral and peppery finish, despite a slightly green touch. Matured 80% in large barrels, 25% of which are new, this is somber yet balanced Hermitage."

"Quite forward and precocious, the 2021 Ermitage les Greffieux offers up scents of pencil shavings and red-berried fruit. Is it a little too cedary perhaps? Often the plushest of the parcel selections, it's medium to full-bodied, ripe and supple, with a long, silky finish tinged with cranberries."

"Deep nose of wild berries and herbs plus raw meat, then with a little aeration a roasted meat character emerges. Incredibly focused on the enormously concentrated and compact palate. Sensational stony minerality and wild herb character at the enormously long and brilliant finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026."

"The 2021 Ermitage Les Greffieux offers more breadth and richness, with perfumed red and black fruits, pepper, and gamey notes. It doesn't have the density of the 2018, 2019, or 2020 but shines for its balance, purity, and elegance, as well as complexity. This charming, seamless, medium to full-bodied Hermitage is going to drink nicely right out of the gate."

"The 2020 Ermitage les Greffieux is dominated by bold, forward fruit. Blackberries, cassis and blueberries flow in waves here, as this parcel has less granite than L'Ermite and Le Pavillon. It's full-bodied but still structured, with fine-grained tannins and a long, silky-textured finish."

"What a sensual Hermitage this is. So ripe and so silky on the rich yet beautifully balanced palate. In spite of the enormous depth this has a certain lightness of touch. Very long, velvety finish. And yes, this also has wonderful black fruit aromas with delicate smoky and peppery nuances. From a vineyard with a Rhone sedimentary soil. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."

"Incredibly dense nose of elderberries with some raw meat and smoke. At least as massively structured as it is concentrated, this is almost too much to take at this early stage in its development, but the tannins are already beautifully integrated and all it needs is a couple of years in bottle to calm down a little. Very firm, stony finish that has so much energy. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Best after 2024."

"The creamy, almost lush 2019 Ermitage les Greffieux boasts knockout aromas of violets, crème de cassis and red raspberries. Full-bodied, yet fine and silky in feel, it's a terrific example of this terroir, showing its hallmark accessibility and tremendous balance and elegance on the long finish."

"Offers up gorgeous fruit, with creamed açaí and blueberry mixed with warmed cassis and a flash of dark plum, which holds center stage while licorice snap, violet, apple wood and sweet bay leaf accents fill in the background. Shows terrific grip through the finish, setting this up for a long life. Best from 2025 through 2040. 10 cases imported."
