M. Chapoutier Les Granilites Rouge

AOP Saint-Joseph, Rhône, France

"Les Granilites" is a mineralogical term which refers to the fine-grained granite that forms the granite- based soil in which the vines grow.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Garnet red with purple highlights.
Nose: Nice intensity of wild dark berry notes (blackcurrant, blackberries), mineral notes (graphite), underscored by lovely, smooth oakiness.
Palate: Soft and well-balanced on entry. Fine, tight tannins, beautiful mineral tautness derived from the granite. Long-lasting finish with lovely dark berry notes.

Fish in tapenade sauce, small game, lamb, cooked pork meats soft cheeses, goat cheese

By hand in dry, sunny weather.

Fermentation is brought on by indigenous yeasts and takes place in temperature controlled concrete tanks. A maceration lasting 4 weeks is carried out, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. It is aged 25% in oak barrels (100% French), which gives the wine body, power, and aromatic complexity. The remaining 75% is aged in concrete tanks, which helps preserve the freshness and minerality of the Syrah.

Granite terrain created by the wind and geological alteration resulting in restrictive soils with good drainage. Here we find the principal soil and climatic elements of great Saint-Joseph wines. These slow kinetics of maturation give the “Granilites” wine great freshness, minerality, and acidity potential. The parcels of vines are located in the communes of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves, the birthplace of the appellation. The altitude and exposure to wind (including the Mistral) ensure that there is a natural self-regulation of pests, while providing cool air throughout the summer. The parcels are primarily southeast facing.

Varietal: 100% Syrah
Aging Potential: 5-10 years

"Broad-shouldered and gutsy, with serious mineral depth girding core of dried plum and kirsch cast in iron. Tannins have shed their burliness, moving into a gentle hold. Tobacco leaf, forest floor and salted licorice add savory dimension with dusting of mocha on the full finish, where sandalwood smoke lingers. Drink now through 2035."

"“If you want to know what Northern Rhone syrah is all about, here is the best introduction to the dark and smoky personality of these wines and their fantastic wild blackberry fruit. Exciting mineral tannins and acidity on the tightly focused, stony palate. So energetic and cool for the hot and dry vintage. Very long, pure finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”"

"Chapoutier's 2021 Saint-Joseph Les Granilites exhibits some crushed stone and raspberry notes but also a decent amount of cedary pencil shavings. Only medium-bodied and not that charming on the palate, there are plentiful tannins and a touch of hardness on the finish, despite the bulk of the tannins seeming quite silky. There's the sensation of slightly over-steeped tea."

"Wild berries, roasted meat, smoke, black pepper and some leather, too. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Lots of violets on the palate giving it a very delicate and elegant character all along. Bright with crisp acidity and a precise, focused finish. Very mineral and granite-driven. Drink or hold."

"The 2021 Saint Joseph Les Granits, which hit a healthy 13.6% natural alcohol, sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as classic, old school Saint Joseph notes of darker fruits, smoked herbs, earth, and crushed stone. It's medium-bodied, with ripe, polished tannins and nicely integrated acidity."

"Sourced from the portion of the appellation around Mauves and Tournon, the 2020 Saint-Joseph Les Granilites is a strong effort, with bold aromas of blueberries and boysenberries accented by strands of resinous herbs, a dusting of crushed stone and a sprinkling of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and concentrated, it even adds some licorice notes on the long, silky finish."

"Dark black fruit and smoke on the nose pull you into this St.-Joseph that manages to be both meaty and elegant. Impressive tannin structure that isn’t a jot too much. Pleasantly dry, but slightly short finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
