M. Chapoutier Les Granilites Blanc

AOP Saint-Joseph, Rhône, France

"Les Granilites" is a mineralogical term which refers to the fine-grained granite that forms the granite- based soil in which the vines grow.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Strong yellow with bright green highlights.
Nose: Fresh, with delicate notes of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit (peaches, pears), delicious aromatic notes, underscored by lovely, smooth oakiness.
Palate: Fresh and well-balanced on entry, nice volume with delicious, dessert-like notes, mineral tautness and a long lingering finish.

Partners perfectly with grilled and roasted white meats as well as fish and shellfish.

By hand in dry, sunny weather.

The entire harvest is pressed directly, followed by cold settling for 48 hours. Fermentation takes place in 600 litre casks with natural yeasts. Ageing for 8 months. During the first two months, the lees are stirred to control and limit oxydation of the wine. 75% of ageing takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine’s freshness and minerality. The remaining 25% is matured in demi-muids (600l barrels) which gives ”Les Granilites” consistency, power and aromatic complexity.

Here there is granite terrain formed by geologic alteration, and content carried in by the wind ensuring that the soils are good for water filteration and restriction. The principal soil and climate components that make for great Saint-Joseph wines can be found. These kinetics of slow maturation, give “Granilites” a potential for freshness, minerality and a particularly interesting tautness.

The parcels of vines are located in the districts of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves, where the principal soil and climate components that make for great Saint-Joseph wines can be found. The altitude and wind exposure (including the Mistral) ensure natural regulation of pests while providing freshness throughout the summer. The parcels are mainly south-east facing.

"Very pretty fragrant, floral and smoky white, with honeysuckle blossom and citrus peel overlaying creamed apple and melon on a mouth coating frame. Details of spice, white mocha and ginger add depth to the polished palate, with a honeyed edge to the salty, mineral-rich and long finish. Kiss of pie crust. Super tasty. Drink now through 2028."

"“Very cool and delicate nose for such a warm and dry vintage, but with a bit of aeration a lovely lemon curd aroma develops, then with a little bit more a whisper of caramel. Focused, medium-bodied palate with a pronounced stony personality in the finish. From vineyards in Tournon and Mauves with a mix of granite and sedimentary soils. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”"

"A blend of two parcels of vines—a vineyard in Mauves and the lower portion of lieu-dit Saint Joseph—the 2021 Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Granilites displays aromas of pencil shavings, quince and lime. It's medium-bodied, showing more fat than the Deschants bottling, but still not a big, rich wine; it is plump and succulent, with a long, citrusy finish."

"Here’s a white St. Joseph that has the minerality we associate with this appellation in excess! Sleek, focused and concentrated with a very stony personality. The fresh and candied citrus aromas are just beginning to open up. Extremely long, filigree finish. Great aging potential. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"Saint Joseph wasn't affected by the frost, so the production of the 2021 Saint Joseph Les Granits Blanc is healthy. It's a terrific wine as well and offers a medium gold hue to go with impressive aromatics of honeyed stone, apricot, white flowers, and orange blossom-like nuances. It shows the fresh, classic, focused style of the vintage and is a beautiful Saint Joseph Blanc to enjoy over the coming decade."

"Sourced from numerous lieux-dits, the 2020 Cote Rotie les Bécasses features generous aromas of cedar, vanilla, mulberries and blueberries. It's medium to full-bodied, not overdone or overripe at all, with a fine line of acidity, crisp berry flavors and a taut, streamlined fee."

"Quite fragrant nose for a white Rhone, with a range of citrus aromas, plus positive touches of smoke and flint. Medium-bodied with nice tension on the mid-palate between retrained richness and mineral acidity. Silky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
