M. Chapoutier De L’Orée Blanc

AOP Hermitage, Rhône, France

Tasting Notes

Colour: intense golden yellow, with hints of green and gold.
Nose: very intense, hot shingles, toffee, very ripe, fruity lemon with floral overtones of acacia and hawthorn.
Palate: well-rounded start, full bodied, very complex with overtones of ripe fruits, spices and roasting. Very long in the mouth, with a fresh final note. According to the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years, indeed from 50 to 75 years.

Grilled or roasted white meats. Perfect with fish, shellfish, and many Asian inspired dishes. Also wonderful with mild creamy cheeses and mature strong cheeses.

Hand harvesting at maturity.

After pressing, the must is cold-settling for around 24 hours. About 50% is vinified in big wooden barrels (600 liters) with regular stirrings of the lees, the rest is in vats. Maturing on lees with regular stirrings for 6 months. Before bottling, the ageing in casks is checked by frequent tastings. The maturing lasts between 10 and 12 months.

The grapes producing “De l’Orée” come from “Les Murets” plot. This soil is made up with very old fluvioglacial alluvial deposits.

The old vines (60 to 70 years old) guarantee low yields and a quality production.

Grapes: Marsanne
Certificates: Organic/Biodynamic

"Hints of honeyed peaches join ripe apricot and melon on the nose of Chapoutier's superb 2021 Ermitage de l'Orée. As always, it's 100% Marsanne from the clay soils of the Les Murets lieu-dit. Medium to full-bodied, it's ripe and succulent, with a long, briny and refreshing finish. It may be closing down by now, so try to hold off opening a bottle until around 2030—or allow several hours for decanting."

"A refined, textural and vibrant Ermitage white with so much restrained power. There is a saltiness here. Dried lemons, quince peel, grilled almonds, white peaches, wet stones, wild herbs and white flowers mingle successively on the nose. It’s medium-bodied yet it has a gigantic dimension. It’s all contained, restrained and funneled into the precise, highly textural and tense palate. Succulent, with baked lemon character and a long, long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2025."

"Leading off the three single vineyard Marsanne releases, the 2021 Ermitage De L'Orée comes mostly from the Les Murets lieu-dit and was aged 12 months in 80% demi-muids, with just 15% being new. It has a beautiful nose of white flowers, stone fruits, quince, and some obvious chalky minerality. It reminds me slightly of the 2012 (though the vintages are nothing alike) and is medium to full-bodied, has a round, supple texture, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It's a brilliant effort, particularly given the vintage."

"A breathtaking and expansive bouquet of mirabelle tart with a wide spectrum of candied citrus aromas, fresh almonds, plus fresh tarragon and shiso leaf. Fabulous concentration and interplay of creamy richness with mineral freshness. The intensity and purity of the stony finish must be tasted to be believed! A pure marsanne from the eastern part of the appellation with a soil of glacial deposits. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."

"A superbly balanced example of this selection, the 2020 Ermitage de l'Orée—sourced from the clay soils of Les Murets—features scents of crushed stone, toasted grain, white peach and ripe melon. Showing no ill effects from its recent bottling at the beginning of September, it's full-bodied, silky and elegant, with a long, harmonious finish."

"Stunning nose of floral honey and brioche with a smoky tension. Enormous concentration of dried stone fruit, but also super-precise on the wide-screen palate. Long finish with an extremely complex texture and very subtle spice and minerality. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."

"Showing considerably better than it did the last time I tasted it, the 2019 Ermitage de l'Orée boasts notes of toasted grain and ripe, honeyed peaches. Full-bodied and expansive, it's opulent, richly textured and long, with waves of flavor echoing on the finish. Any bitter notes seem to have been seamlessly incorporated into the wine's impressive mouthfeel."
