M. Chapoutier Barbe Rac

AOP Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

Tasting Notes

Colour: intense garnet.
Nose: herbacy, spices (liquorice), chocolate, fruits (strawberry).
Palate: ample, fleshy, hot and round. Outstanding density with an impressive length. According to the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years, indeed from 50 to 75 years.

Pairs well with all meats, marinated or in sauces. Also enjoy with cheese.

The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest. This sorting is compulsory and allows the selection of the best bunches of grapes.

Grenache, being sensitive to oxidation, vinifications are made in concrete tanks. Fermenting lasts about 3 weeks (which allows a polymerization of tannins) with a temperature which varies between 30 and 33°C. Only the free-run wine is used in this single vineyard. In vats for around 16 months.

Quaternary terrace with a surface of shingles coming from the former bed of the Rhône. The parcel producing this single vineyard has a complex and various geological composition. Vines are 90 years old.

Varietal: Grenache
Certifications: Organic/Biodynamic

"An elegant, glossy style, with a lighter, less-extracted profile to its red currant, dried strawberry and bright cherry notes, underscored by warm soil, soy sauce and garrigue, plus warm spice and pepper details. Streams through with fresh, deftly polished tannins and chalky mineral elements lining the long, complex finish. Beguiling, perfumed and complex. Drink now through 2038."

"A terrific success given the challenges of the vintage, Chapoutier's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac—all Grenache, made without any oak—showcases cherries and raspberries, a delicate, silky feel and decent length and concentration. Fruit-forward and elegant, it's definitely one 2021 not to turn up your nose at—just don't expect to age it for more than about a decade"

"A remarkable 2021 Chateauneuf with fantastic balance between creamy richness and mineral freshness that enables it to feel way lighter than this full-bodied wine really is. Deep red fruit and subtle spice fill out the ample and well-structured palate, the fine tannins building very nicely at the long, complete finish. From the extreme west of Chateauneuf, where it grows on the galets-cobblestone soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”"

""All Grenache that was 90% destemmed and raised mainly in concrete, beautiful wild strawberries, hints of framboise, loamy soil, spice, and subtle floral notes all define the aromatics of the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Barbe Rac, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.""

"Tasted just prior to bottling, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac—all tank-aged Grenache—boasts extroverted aromas of garrigue, black cherries and black raspberries. It's full-bodied and a bit youthfully edgy, without the richness or concentration of the 2019."

"A seductive 100% grenache with cherries, mixed berries, licorice and sweet spices on the nose. Full body with creamy tannins. Round and velvety with a caressing touch of strawberries and raspberries at the center. It has volume and texture with a succulent and precise long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."

"A strong effort, Chapoutier's tank-aged 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is 100% Grenache from a parcel of old vines near the western edge of the appellation. As always, it showcases outrageously pure red raspberries and cherries, this vintage adding minor floral notes and showing less garrigue than it has in some other years. Packed with flavor, this bold, full-bodied wine features gentle waves of silky tannins, framing a long, intense finish."

"Tons of forest berries and damson plums, but also dried herbs. An extremely expressive wine with great fruit, very fresh and slightly crunchy tannins, plus energy that makes it leap and bound across the palate. Stunning licorice and mineral finish that proves Chateauneuf can be an exciting and elegant wine. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2024."

"Ripe and alluring, with a silky feel despite ample depth to the waves of cassis, bitter cherry and black berry fruit flavors. The finish boasts garrigue, singed cedar, dried anise, sanguine and black tea notes. A beauty for the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2036. 9 cases imported."
