Isole e Olena Chardonnay Toscana IGT
Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy
Isole e Olena produced their first Chardonnay in 1987 after grafting select French clones of Chardonnay onto varietals of white grapes already thriving at the estate.
An artisanal white, this wine stands out for its quality, longevity, and style; it can be considered the ideal Isole e Olena wine. Fermented in small barrels, of which 25-30% are new wood, the aging of this wine begins only after a long contact with the finest lees.
Tasting Notes
Light greenish gold in color, the Chardonnay is aromatic on the nose, with spicy, buttery perfumes. On the palate it balances ripe fruit, fresh bread crust from the oven, with a hint of spice from the oak aging and a long, slightly citrus finish.
Vintage Notes
The 2023 growing season saw more balanced weather compared to previous years. Spring began with adequate rainfall, which helped in building up water reserves in the soil. The summer months were warm but without the extreme heat waves experienced in the recent past. Periodic rain during the growing season helped maintain vine health and grape development.
Winemaking Notes
Chardonnay grapes are fermented in small barrels with a balanced use of new wood, a maximum of 25/30 per cent, and matured with a long contact with the finest lees.
Vineyard Notes
The grapes for this wine come from vineyards spread out on the North-Eastern side of the Isole e Olena estate, surrounded by forest, at an altitude of 350-450 meters. Soil here is a mixture of limestone, marly clay slates.

Vintage Notes
The 2022 vintage began with a nice spring and the right quantity of rain, which didn’t create any special phytosanitary issue. Very cool temperatures at night and warm and ventilated days favoured an excellent and rapid flowering and fruit setting. From mid-June the summer became the protagonist, with constant high temperatures, which grew until mid-August. Luckily after the third week of the month the much-awaited rain arrived, guaranteeing a lowering of the temperature and allowing to arrive at an early harvest with healthy and ripe grapes.

Vintage Notes
The weather in 2021 was quite regular. Rains in spring enabled good foliage development and provided abundant water supply for the drier summer months. The only phenomenon registered in springtime was a slight alteration in bud development times, owing to lower-than-average temperatures for a few days, which slowed down the process of vegetation in the cooler areas.
Harvest Notes
Selected and picked by hand during the end of August
