Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley, California
Tasting Notes
Reminiscent of classic Napa Valley elegance, the Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon also embraces a modern ripe style by weaving in a small percentage of Petite Sirah to lift the aromatics and add plushness to the palate. Black currant, broken cacao and a wisp of eastern spices from the French oak provide structure and a graceful finish. Hints of floral from both the Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot are exotically layered over the plum and bramble based fruit notes.
Vintage Notes
The winter of 2017 provided ample rainfall to invigorate the vines, providing them with the nutrients and water stores to carry a balanced crop through harvest. A tepid spring led to bud break a few days behind previous vintages, yet a consistently warm Spring and Summer afforded wonderful ripening and sunlight across the grape clusters. The early Fall was dry, warm and breezy pushing the grapes to maturity, leading to a lovely harvest with small berries that added to the intensity of the vintage.
Winemaking Notes
The grapes are exclusively hand-harvested. During fermentation the colors, flavors, textures and aromas are naturally extracted from the skins. At approximately 14 days, the primary fermentation is completed. The tanks are then drained, then the skins are removed and gently pressed to capture the remaining complex juice. Finally the young wine is transferred into small French oak barrels (66% new French oak) and aged for 18 months. Blending Notes: Thoughtfully sculpted, the 2017 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of three complementary varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon provides the depth and structure; Petite Sirah imparts exotic spices and violet floral attributes, and Petit Verdot ties the blend together with additional structure and a vibrant aroma of primrose and subtle sandalwood.

Vintage Notes
A long and warm growing season allowed the grapes to manifest dark fruits flavors. Infrequent heat spikes softened the traditionally firm and structured tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon. The warm season balanced by night time fog and cool Napa Valley nights, calmed the ripening process and instilled a unique blend of tannin and fruit which inspired a rich background of deep exotic spices.

Vintage Notes
A nearly perfect Napa Valley growing season and harvest provided an abundance of quality grapes in 2013. From spring bud break, through flowering, fruit set, and ripening, conditions were ideal. A consistent stretch of warm summer weather, without large heat spikes and with plenty of cool and foggy nights, ripened grapes to perfection.
Winemaking Notes
After the grapes were gently hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the juice fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with an extended post-fermentation maceration that beautifully married flavors and tannins, giving our Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon its lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 18 months aging in French oak (66% new), further concentrated the wine’s rich cassis and blackberry cobbler flavors, adding subtle nuances of torched crème brûlée. Through numerous barrel tastings and blending trials, a final blend that includes Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Petit Verdothelps make this wine accessible today for immediate drinking while still maintaining the Cabernet structure for extended cellaring.

Vineyard Notes
The grapes for Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon come from Napa Valley’s finest winegrowing regions to create a blend that truly represents the entirety of Napa Valley. Fruit from hillside vineyards at the family’s Oso Vineyard estate in northeast Napa were blended with valley floor fruit from Oakville, Rutherford, and Wooden Valley. By blending fruit from Napa’s volcanic hillside soils and the deeper alluvial soils of the valley floor, the Michael Mondavi family crafts a wine that boasts a beautifully rounded mouthfeel and layers of rich, complex flavors.
