Donnafugata Anthìlia

Sicilia DOC, Sicilia, Italy

The label depicts the face of a woman, mysterious and fleeting like the Elymian civilization. Anthìlia is the name given to the city of Entella on the top of the Rocca in Roman times. Today, Anthìlia is the name of a wine that is identified with the ancient territory where it has its roots. It is the first wine to have been conceived at Donnafugata and still remains to this day in the hearts of many admirers.

Tasting Notes

Anthìlia 2024 has a yellow straw color. The nose offers a fresh and fragrant bouquet with notes of white pulp fruit and zest of citrus combined with delicate hints of wildflowers. In the mouth the fruity notes are enhanced by a pronounced freshness and pleasant sapidity.

Perfect when paired with raw fish, fried fish and vegetable pie; excellent with fresh cheeses and white meat. Serve in glasses of medium size and height; it can be uncorked at the time of serving, excellent at 9-11°C (48- 51°F).

In Contessa Entellina, the 2024 growing season was dry, with 409 mm of rainfall compared to the average of 651 mm, and higher-than-average temperatures. Between June and August, thanks to the water reserves in the estate's basins, emergency irrigation was carried out in many of the estate's vineyards, supporting the development of the vegetative and productive cycle. Special attention was given to agrometeorological monitoring to support the agronomic decisions adopted. The yield was lower than the estate's average, but the quality fully met the company's objectives.

*Rainfall data is collected by SIAS, the Sicilian Agro-Meteorological Service; the rain- fall recorded from October 1 to September 30 of the following year is considered; the average is calculated from the 2003 harvest.

The harvest took place between August and the first days of September, according to the ripening of the different varieties in the various plots.

Overall, 604 mm of rain was recorded compared to the average of 662 mm*. In particular, after a winter with little rain, the abundant rains in May guaranteed an excellent water supply to the soil, which allowed the vineyard to cope with the high temperatures that lasted for about ten days in July. The follow- ing weeks were characterized by ideal climatic conditions. 2023 was a challenging vintage: thanks to scrupulous agronomic management, the vegetative production cycle ended regularly, giving life to well-ripened grapes. There was a lower production compared to the aver- age of this Estate, of quality perfectly in line with the company objectives.

*The precipitation data are collected by SIAS, Sicilian Agrometeorological Service; the rainfall recorded from October 1st to September 30th of the following year is taken into account; the average is calculated starting from the 2003 harvest.

The international grape varieties were harvested in August; the native varieties - including the Lucido (Catarratto) which is prevalent in the blend - were harvested from mid-August onwards; the harvest ended in September.

Tasting Notes

Anthìlia 2022 has a yellow straw color. The nose offers a fresh and fragrant bouquet with notes of white pulp fruit (peach) combined with hints of wild-flowers. In the mouth, we find the evident fruity note, refreshed by a pleasant sapidity. The finish has good persistence.

Perfect when paired with raw fish, fried fish and vegetable pie; excellent with fresh cheeses and white meat. Serve in glasses of medium size and height; it can be uncorked at the time of serving, excellent at 9-11°C (48-51°F).

Thanks to favorable climatic conditions, the 2022 vintage produced excellent results. A total of 1,016 mm of rain has been recorded, compared to an average* of 665 mm. Rains were concentrated in autumn and spring (between the end of April and the first ten days of May), providing soils with an important water reserve supplemented by emergency irrigation in some vineyards. Among the 1,016 mm of rainfall recorded, 150 mm fell during the last week of September, after the end of harvest. Generally speaking, temperatures were in line with last year’s average; only in June did temperatures peak slowing down the vegetative phase, which later resumed regularly as temperatures returned to their seasonal average. Compared to 2021, there was a slight decrease in production; however, the quality of the 2022 vintage is very good.

The classic of Donnafugata appreciated worldwide. The 2021 vintage is characterized by a fresh and fragrant bouquet with fruity and floral notes. A very versatile wine, ideal with fish and vegetarian first and second courses.

Anthìlia 2021 has a yellow straw color. The nose offers a fresh and fragrant bouquet with notes of white pulp fruit (peach) combined with hints of wildflowers. In the mouth we find the evident fruity note, refreshed by a pleasant sapidity. The finish has a good persistence.

Perfect when paired with lightly smoked fish, crustaceans, anchovies and first courses, also baked. Excellent with tuna or Caesar salad and spring rolls. Serve in glasses of medium size and height; it can be uncorked at time of serving, excellent at 9–11°C (48- 51°F)

At Contessa Entellina, 615 mm of rain were recorded in the 2021 vintage, a figure slightly below the average* of 645 mm of this area: rainfall was concentrated in winter, particularly in February and March, while spring was dry; in this season the delicate phases of flowering and fruit set took regularly place. At the end of June there was a peak of heat which slowed down the vegetative phase of the plants, which was later compensated by lower temperatures in July. A further heat wave in the first two weeks of August accelerated ripening. The entire vegetative production cycle was accompanied by intense and careful work in the vineyard and thus ended regularly. The quantity of grapes produced is slightly higher than in 2020 which - it must be remembered - was below the average. The quality is fully in line with the company objectives, oriented towards quality productions. *The precipitation data are collected by SIAS, Sicilian Agrometeorological Service; the rainfall recorded from October 1st to September 30th of the following year is taken into account; the average is calculated starting from the 2003 harvest.

"The 2023 Anthìlia is remarkably pretty, blending white flowers, freshly sliced pears and hints of wet stone. This is silky-smooth with nearly oily textures, offset by a twang of sour citrus and crunchy orchard fruit. The finish is perfumed and crisply refreshing, wrapping things up with a lime and mineral tinge that calls the taster back to the glass."

"The 2022 Anthìlia is airy and floral, with sweet smoke and crushed stones giving way to young peach. It's silky-smooth, more textural than expected, with lime-tinged orchard fruits and sour melon that add a lovely inner tension. The 2022 tapers off crisply refreshing with medium length and tropical citrus notes. Anthìlia is primarily produced using Catarratto and a small number of interplanted white varieties."

Medium-bodied, there is impressive texture, lively acidity and very good persistence. This is quite delicious and a true crowd pleaser, with its beautiful freshness. Enjoy over the next 2-3 years as an apertif or paired with sweet and sour pork."

It soothes with silky textures, as a tantalizing burst of citrus and saline-tinged acids add energy and verve. While a bit short, the 2021 leaves the palate completely refreshed and aching for more.
