Colomé Estate Malbec

Calchaqui Valley, Salta

Wines of distinction have been crafted at Colomé in the Upper Calchaquí Valley in the Salta region since 1831.

Tasting Notes

Bright and intense in color with beautiful aromas of blackberries, red fruits and exotic floral notes, this wine delivers aromatics that entice the senses. A full lush entry of ripe and rich black fruit surrounds spiced oak notes and hints of pepper. Fresh acidity supports big, bold tannins and wonderful complexity.

AGEING: 15 months in 2° to 5° use French oak barrels, 6 months in bottle
WINEMAKER: Thibaut Delmotte

Four estate vineyards are blended to achieve the finest expression of Malbec. As the backbone of the blend, Colomé vineyard (60%) sourronds the winery at 2300 metres and lends complexity and weight. El Arenal vineyard (25%) at 2600 metres gives elegance and freshness to the blend. La Brava vineyard (5%) sits at 1700 metres and yields intense ripe fruit. Altura Máxima vineyard (10%) at 3111 metres and one of the highest vineyard in the world, gives floral and mineral notes with fine grain tannins to the assemblage.

Higher altitudes offer much more sun, much less UV protection and produce a thicker skinned grape that delivers a more robust taste with fresh acidity to support it.

ALTITUDE: Blend of 4 different terroir and altitude  (1700, 2300, 2600 & 3111 meters) VITICURAL AREA: Calchaquí Valleys, Salta, Argentina

    New Wine Review, December 2023

"This looks opaque at the core, but it also has the tiniest magenta rim at the sides of the glass. Okay. Wow. Now that I have this in my mouth, this is super different. It is very savory, even salty on the attack and through the finish. There’s some good underlying fruit–boysenberries and black currants, but overall, this doesn’t taste fruit-driven. This savory taste makes me think it’s a perfect pairing for dry-aged steak (no, no, no, not wet-aged.) Whatever you pair with it, the tannins here are class act and elegant and the acidity wedges in subtly. So. Darn. Good."

"The clean, varietal and fruit-driven 2020 Estate Malbec mixes grapes from different terroirs and altitudes where they have vineyards: 1,800, 2,300, 2,600 and 3,111 meters! The wine is ripe at 14.9% alcohol but feels very harmonious and balanced, clean and focused. It matured in French oak barrels, 10% of them new, for 15 months."

"“Our classic Malbec,” is how Thibaut Delmotte describes this blend of four vineyards at different altitudes - Altura Máxima, Colomé, El Arenal and La Brava. Wonderfully juicy and scented, it’s the perfect introduction to the variety, with intense damson, blueberry and wild thyme flavours, palate-caressing tannins and a tangy finish. 2023-30"

"The dark and brooding 2019 Auténtico Malbec had to be harvested quickly because of a heat wave during the harvest. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in stainless steel and the rest in concrete egg. To be honest, it feels a little flat in the palate and has plenty of notes of ripe black fruit, not as vibrant as some past vintages... 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020."

"Colomé Estate wines are growing more and more stylish and precise. One of the keys was the addition of an optional grape selector that allows winemakers to discard the dehydrated grapes. The 2019 vintage of the Malbec Estate is thus much fruitier with ripe plus and cherry over balsamic, herbal notes and a touch of sunny Calchaquí syrup. Both concentrated and juicy, the firm tannins sculpt the good volume and keep the energy in check, ensuring that it's merely sprightly in contrast to the booming power of previous vintages. As pure and primary as ever but now with greater elegance."

"A Calchaquí Malbec made from grapes from four vineyards owned by the winery, aged for 15 months in French barrels, 25% of them new. Dark purple in color. The nose delivers notes of plum and mountain herbs plus blackberry and hints of spice. Intense and concentrated, the palate has unusual power, featuring polished, active tannins that lend a rugged texture. Finishes with a whiff of wood and fruit. A red that exemplifies a segment of the Argentine market."

"Lots of concentration here. This is packed with dense, ripe black cherries, damsons and iodine. Floral and spicy accents, too. Full-bodied, very big and dense with a tannin structure of grandeur. Yet, there’s no lack of mid-palate detail. Lay it down in your cellar. Better after 2023."

"Toasty black fruit aromas are herbal but also lively. A lush and saturated palate is a true mouth filler, while this Malbec pumps out blackberry and crème de cassis flavors prior to a heady finish that comes up short on complexity and nuance. This is entirely about fruit, fruit and more fruit."

"Bright, dark medium ruby. Lively aromas and flavors of crushed blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and mocha. Densely packed, fine-grained and savory, with its ripe, creamy flavors complicated by a wild gamey quality. As rich, concentrated and deep as this wine is, it's not over the top. This outstanding Malbec finishes ripely tannic and long, with compelling sweetness of fruit. (14.9% alcohol; this wine represents a blend of vineyards and altitudes in Calchaqui Valley; aged for 15 months in a mix of one- to ten-year-old French barriques)"
