Tasting Notes

Bright and intense in color with beautiful aromas of blackberries, red fruits and exotic floral notes, this wine delivers aromatics that entice the senses. A full lush entry of ripe and rich black fruit surrounds spiced oak notes and hints of pepper. Fresh acidity supports big, bold tannins and wonderful complexity.

HARVEST: March - April 2023

AGEING: 15 months in 2° to 5° use French oak barrels, 6 months in bottle
WINEMAKER: Thibaut Delmotte

Four estate vineyards are blended to achieve the finest expression of Malbec. As the backbone of the blend, Colomé vineyard (60%) sourronds the winery at 2300 metres and lends complexity and weight. El Arenal vineyard (25%) at 2600 metres gives elegance and freshness to the blend. La Brava vineyard (5%) sits at 1700 metres and yields intense ripe fruit. Altura Máxima vineyard (10%) at 3111 metres and one of the highest vineyard in the world, gives floral and mineral notes with fine grain tannins to the assemblage.

Higher altitudes offer much more sun, much less UV protection and produce a thicker skinned grape that delivers a more robust taste with fresh acidity to support it.

ALTITUDE: Blend of 4 different terroir and altitude  (1700, 2300, 2600 & 3111 meters)
VITICURAL AREA: Calchaquí Valleys

"Colomé’s Malbec uses fruit from four different estates - Colomé, El Arenal, La Brava and Altura Máxima, this has the garrigue notes of thyme and rosemary that are a feature of many northern Argentinian reds. Aged in 10% new oak, it’s a lovely wine at the price, with perfume to spare, some underlying grip and backbone and joyful bramble, plum and blueberry fruit. 2026-32"

"The 2022 Malbec Estate is an impressive representation of the variety from this northern appellation, brawny, beefy, and herbal, with a spicy intensity of dark, earthy black fruit. The finish is moderate in length and continues an earthy, herbal theme. The wine should age another 7-10 years."

"The 2022 Estate Malbec combines four vineyards ranging from 1,700 meters to 3,100 meters above sea level and matured for 15 months in both new and used barrique. An inky nose of opaque fruits, tobacco leaves, fresh herbs and turned earth introduces a dense, compact palate with a mineral-tinged core. It concludes with a long, rich finish framed with taut, sturdy tannins."

"The 2022 Malbec Estate blends grapes from various Calchaquí Valley sites. Its 15 months of aging in 225- and 500-liter barrels with 25% new oak contributes complexity and character. Deep purple in color, it opens with blackberry, plum, spice and floral notes against an oaky backdrop. The palate mirrors these elements with juicy fruit, a plush texture, active tannins and a hint of chalk. The 2022 is long, flavorful and representative of northwest Argentina."

Dark berry flavors follow through to a rich, firm finish that is lifted by a refreshing backbone of acidity. Drink now or hold."

"This looks opaque at the core, but it also has the tiniest magenta rim at the sides of the glass. Okay. Wow. Now that I have this in my mouth, this is super different. It is very savory, even salty on the attack and through the finish. There’s some good underlying fruit–boysenberries and black currants, but overall, this doesn’t taste fruit-driven. This savory taste makes me think it’s a perfect pairing for dry-aged steak (no, no, no, not wet-aged.) Whatever you pair with it, the tannins here are class act and elegant and the acidity wedges in subtly. So. Darn. Good."

The wine is ripe at 14.9% alcohol but feels very harmonious and balanced, clean and focused. It matured in French oak barrels, 10% of them new, for 15 months."

"The dark and brooding 2019 Auténtico Malbec had to be harvested quickly because of a heat wave during the harvest. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in stainless steel and the rest in concrete egg. To be honest, it feels a little flat in the palate and has plenty of notes of ripe black fruit, not as vibrant as some past vintages... 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020."

"Colomé Estate wines are growing more and more stylish and precise. One of the keys was the addition of an optional grape selector that allows winemakers to discard the dehydrated grapes. The 2019 vintage of the Malbec Estate is thus much fruitier with ripe plus and cherry over balsamic, herbal notes and a touch of sunny Calchaquí syrup. Both concentrated and juicy, the firm tannins sculpt the good volume and keep the energy in check, ensuring that it's merely sprightly in contrast to the booming power of previous vintages. As pure and primary as ever but now with greater elegance."

The nose delivers notes of plum and mountain herbs plus blackberry and hints of spice. Intense and concentrated, the palate has unusual power, featuring polished, active tannins that lend a rugged texture. Finishes with a whiff of wood and fruit.
