Colomé El Arenal Malbec

Calchaqui Valley, Salta, Argentina

This extreme altitude single vineyard wine is a tribute to all those who dare to take the adventurous path, and do what has never been done before. This is what Donald and Ursula Hess did when they planted El Arenal, their first vineyard, at an incredible 2600 meters above sea level in the Alto Calchaqui Valley. Its name literally means sand, which is true to its rugged terroir, where grapes are stressed by intense sun and by cool nights.

Tasting Notes

Very deep color, almost black, with purple reflections. Elegant and complex nose: black fruit (blackberry, cherry), spicy (white pepper) and floral (violet) and mineral notes. Well integrated toasting of the barrels. On the palate it is very fruity, vibrant and concentrated, with a good structure and firm tannins.

Ageing: 12 months in 225 and 500 liters French Oak Barrels, 1 and 4 uses. 6 months in bottle
Winemaker: Thibaut Delmotte

Sustainably farmed grapes and the magic of El Arenal produce an incredibly sophisticated tannin structure, and result in a supreme balance of fruit, freshness, power, complexity and elegance that only this extreme altitude has to offer. El Arenal Single Vineyard is the culmination of the dedication, patience, and untamable spirit of innovation of Bodega Colomé. Vineyards: El Arenal, Payogasta, Calchaqui Valley

"Builds a complex tapestry of alluring aromas and flavors including rose hip, floral red currant, guava, mace and Mission fig on a texturally appealing frame, with a saline accent lending mouthwatering freshness that allows the flavors to linger around structured tannins, plus late hints of graphite and dark chocolate. Drink now through 2038. "

"With an herbal, earthy imprint of red fruit, ample tannin, and present oak, the 2022 Malbec Colome El Arenal is full-bodied yet fresh, with an ample length of anise, leather, and dried herb. The structure suggests further cellaring, with a good drinking window of 2032-2042."

"The 2022 El Arenal Malbec derives from two plots at 2,600 meters in altitude and underwent a 12-month élevage in 500-liter barrique, 60% of which were new. It is impressively integrated on the nose, leading with a refined, black-fruited and saturated bouquet, introducing a fittingly svelte, dense and taut palate. As is consistent across the Colomé lineup, the finish is intense, inky and staining yet supported by bracing minerality and ultrarefined tannins."

"The 2022 Malbec Estate blends grapes from various Calchaquí Valley sites. Its 15 months of aging in 225- and 500-liter barrels with 25% new oak contributes complexity and character. Deep purple in color, it opens with blackberry, plum, spice and floral notes against an oaky backdrop. The palate mirrors these elements with juicy fruit, a plush texture, active tannins and a hint of chalk. The 2022 is long, flavorful and representative of northwest Argentina."

"El Arenal is a brilliant, single-site Malbec from a vineyard of the same name at 2,600 metres. Now into its fourth vintage, it’s an intense, concentrated, high-altitude style, with masses of colour, plum and blackberry fruit intensity, lots of zip and minerality and beautifully judged 60% new oak. Superb from Thibaut Delmotte. 2025-32"

"A deliciously impressive high-altitude red, the 2021 Malbec Colome El Arenal wows in complex layers of black and blue fruit, finding additional complexity in an herbal backbone dotted in black pepper and spiced oak. Supple tannins give it a breadth and depth that suggest further aging potential another 15-20 years."

"This Malbec comes from vines planted at 8,500 feet in Salta, Argentina's northern wine region, and was aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The nose bursts with cherries and blueberries, joined by a dash of baking spices. It's juicy and slightly herbaceous on the palate, but intense wood spice and black fruit balance it. The finish displays earthy notes of dark chocolate and thyme. "

"The 2021 Malbec El Arenal hails from Payogasta in the Calchaquí Valley. Aged 12 months in 60% new 500-liter French oak barrels, it’s dark purple in hue. The nose unfolds with notes of blackberry, blueberry and chutney. Rich and intense, with fine-grained tannins and a dusty texture, the palate is compact and complex. This is a pure, intense high-altitude wine.”"

"A rich but fresh malbec with plenty of blackberries, raw spices, graphite, stones and violets on the nose. The firm and powerful, dusty tannins lend a bit more density and weight to the already structured, full-bodied palate without over-extraction. Pretty pristine and tannic but comfortably chewy. Needs two years to get the tannins softened. Better from 2025"

    New Wine Review, December 2023

"Raven black at the core then almost neon magenta at the rim, this wine is equally wow-ing on the nose with its exuberantly ripe boysenberries and cassis inflected with crushed graphite and drying flowers. The fruit purity is head-turning. The intense flavors are concentrated but not heavy. In fact, there’s only the lightest touch of glycerol on this full-bodied wine. This is an impressive feat with the high–though well-integrated–alcohol. The solid, minerally finish pops with lifting acidity. This is seamless and already drinking very well. Post-tasting: This is the second vintage of this wine, which was previously blended into the Estate Malbec bottling."

"This wine comes from Payogasta in the Calchaquí Valleys, at 8,530 feet. Grapes at this altitude endure intense sunlight and diurnal temperature variation. Dried cherry, strawberry jam and hints of chalk fill the nose of this Malbec. A good structure holds plum, blackberry and strawberry. It finishes with smoke and herbaceous notes"

"El Arenal is a 45-hectare vineyard in the same district as their Altura Maxima Vineyard in the Payogasta zone of Salta, where the vineyards are located at some 2,600 meters in altitude on sandy soils of granitic origin. The 2020 El Arenal Malbec was produced with grapes from 17-year-old vines fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French barriques, 30% of them new, for 15 months. The wine is very intense and has absorbed the oak nicely. It has a lot of color and aromas, but it's balanced and harmonious, not exuberant or exotic. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with some fine-grained tannins. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021."
