Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore

Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC, Piemonte, Italy

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby red color. The intense bouquet is reminiscent of violets and ripe strawberries. In the mouth it has an excellent tannic texture, well integrated and fine, accompanied by good acidity which gives freshness and persistence.

The 2023 vintage was a challenging one, requiring careful vineyard management to contend with extreme weather. A mild, wet winter led to early budbreak in March, followed by a sudden cold spell in April that caused frost damage. Spring brought average rainfall, with a burst of intense rain from late May to early June that replenished soil moisture and supported vine growth. June and July experienced warm, dry conditions, with steady sunlight aiding fruit set and berry development. In mid-July, violent hailstorms swept across northern Italy, causing varying damage across vineyard sites and reducing crop yields. August and September experienced warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain, promoting excellent grape development. Harvest began in mid-September with Dolcetto and Arneis, extending into late October for Nebbiolo. While yields were below average due to weather challenges, fruit quality was high, with the wines display excellent balance, vibrant acidity, refined tannins and excellent aging potential.

One of the legendary winemakers of the world, Bruno Giacosa crafted the most prestigious single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco wines during a career that spanned nearly eight decades. He joined the family business at the age of 15, representing the third generation of his Langhe winemaking family. Giacosa’s unfailing pursuit of perfection, his unrivaled palate and his intimate knowledge of vineyards in the Langhe quickly drew recognition and helped establish Piedmont as a leading wine region. In 1980, Giacosa began to acquire prime parcels in Serralunga d’Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco to produce wines that are rightly regarded as the finest expressions of Nebbiolo. His legacy rests with daughter Bruna, who continues to uphold her father’s winemaking philosophy to respect traditional techniques while using the best of modern technology. The goal is for each distinguished site to produce articulate, unique wines.

"The 2023 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore pours a bright ruby color and immediately delivers a lifted perfume of cinnamon, anise, preserved cranberries, and wildflowers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, refreshing acidity, and balanced length, offering more complexity than its category might suggest. This should not be mistaken for a simple entry-level Nebbiolo."

"Made from old vines up to 70-years old, this exquisite Nebbiolo boasts a sumptuous nose of red cherry, strawberry and red plum. A flood of dark florals fills the mouth, perfuming the pristine, fleshy fruit. Suede-like tannins are fine grained with an elegant verticality, stealthy in power yet never overstepping their boundary. Sweet spice nuances of cinnamon and mace lead to an earthy finish redolent of truffles. Part of the vineyard was hit by the vicious summer hailstorm in 2023, so only 7,200 bottles (rather than the usual 11,000) were produced."

"Coming from the sandy soils of Roero, the 2022 Nebbiolo D'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore is a translucent red color and opens to refreshing notes of bright redcurrants, lifted spice, an elegant floral perfume, and tangerine. A medium-bodied, elegant, and refined wine on the palate, with delicate fruity ripeness, it’s fresh and retains a lovely structure. It’s a fruity vintage for this wine, but it has a lovely refreshing acidity. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years, although it’s simply delicious now."

"The Bruno Giacosa 2022 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore opens to bright cherry flavors and a pretty ruby color. The wine shows great fruit intensity, and there is a note of candied cherry that really pops in this vintage. It is especially fruity and bright. This is considered a hot vintage, but Bruna Giacosa tells me that it did not spark the same stress levels that vintners suffered in the more challenging 2023 vintage. Harvest occurred on the 4th and 5th of October, before the rain started. The fruit is generous and primary, and the wine ends with mildly chalky tannins."

"This is very serious for the appellation, with pure cherry, bark and walnut character as well as a hint of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, firm and focused, with integrated tannins and a long and flavorful finish. More like a Barolo. Great site. Give it a year or two, but it’s already impressive."

"Cherry, bright berry and cassis emerge from the Bruno Giacosa 2020 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore. This is a somewhat looser, more open-knit approach to Nebbiolo that offers a delightful, fruit-forward mouthfeel that is characterized by moments of delicate softness and, alternatively, bright freshness. Blue flowers and violets appear on the close."
