Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast, March 2024

EDITORS' CHOICE. This elegant wine from Dan Goldfield smells subtle and spicy, tastes creamy and complex and feels bracing and light in texture. The harmony among fresh, crisp apples and pears, light toast and butter nuances and restrained oak toastiness is superb”

2021 Dutton-Goldfield Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir

Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast, March 2024

CELLAR SELECTION. Excellent concentration and a firm, tangy texture are impressive in this appropriately tannic, well-balanced wine. Abundant black fruits and oak spices such as cinnamon, cedar and toast are generous on the palate and lingering on the finish. Best from 2025–2032. ”

2019 Pym-Rae Red Blend

Lisa Perotti-Brown, The Wine Independent, February 2023

“From Alfred Tesseron's (owner of Pontet Canet in Pauillac) estate on Mount Veeder, the 2019 Pym Rae is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20%, Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep purple-black colored, it requires a fair bit of swirling before it charges out of the gate with bold notes of creme de cassis, black cherry compote, and blueberry pie, followed by suggestions of clove oil, lilacs, licorice, and tar, plus a spicy waft of cumin seed. The full-bodied palate delivers beguiling energy from the brightness of fruit, bursting with fragrant floral notes, minerally sparks, and exotic spices. It has a taut backbone of invigorating acidity, matched by firm, ripe, grainy tannins, supporting the epic long, multi-layered finish. This 2019 is the vinous definition of opulence. This is the first vintage certified organic and biodynamic. Only a bout 20,000 bottles were made and are due to be released in autumn 2023. ”

2019 Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso

James Suckling, James Suckling, August 2021

“A sophisticated Etna red with the bright red-fruit and orange-zest aromas that make this appellation stand out in the Sicilian context. Elegant balance of fine tannins and fruit on the medium-bodied palate that shunts up the energy level when the mineral acidity kicks in at the finish. Drink or hold.”

2018 Donnafugata Fragore

Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, October 2022

“Fragrant with mineral, floral and cured tobacco notes on the nose, while the palate layers light, satiny tannins with a pure chime of pureed raspberry and hints of red licorice, orange peel and mocha. A lively and appealing, medium-bodied version. Drink now through 2028. 28 cases imported.”

2018 Donnafugata Fragore

Eric Guido, Vinous, July 2022

“Musty red currants, underbrush and crushed ashen stone form a dark and inviting bouquet as the 2018 Etna Rosso Fragore opens in the glass. This is pure and lifted in style, with vivid wild berry fruits and hints of tangerine energized by bright acidity. The palate is left drenched in primary concentration, as bitter hints of licorice and balsamic spice slowly fade. This is a total success for a difficult vintage. The Fragore hails from the Montelaguardia Contrada on the north side of Etna. It's refined in a second-and third-pass barriques for 16 months. ”

2018 Donnafugata Fragore

James Suckling, James Suckling, August 2022

“I love the enveloping fragrance of this Etna red, as much as the breathtaking silkiness on the very concentrated palate. Starts with a blast of red berries, but as it flows over the palate, it slowly turns in a totally Mediterranean direction. Notes of capers and wild mountain herbs at the staggeringly long finish. Still slightly tight, so try to be patient. ”

2019 Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco

Eric Guido, Vinous, July 2022

“An enticing blend of lemon custard, sweet spice and blood orange make the 2019 Etna Bianco Sul Vulcano impossible to ignore. This is soft-textured with medium-bodied weight, nicely contrasted by saline-minerals, young pear, and hints of almond. It leaves a staining of primary concentration, citrusy and tart while fading long and classically dry. The Sul Volcano is a varietal Mt. Etna Carricante. ”

2019 Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco

Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, November 2022

“A round, creamy white, with pretty lime blossom and graphite aromas wafting through flavors of ripe, juicy creamed apple and pear and rich hints of honeycomb, vanilla and lemon-infused pastry cream. This is backed by citrus peel acidity, which provides refreshing snap on the finish.”

2019 Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco

James Suckling, James Suckling, August 2021

“Although this has tons of Etna mineral character, it's also a very elegant, medium-bodied dry white. Lovely interplay of white and citrus fruit with subtle herbal and caper character. Wonderful, long and silky finish with a touch of pine nuts. Super winemaking! Drink or hold.”

2016 Pym-Rae Red Blend

Jeb Dunnuck, Jeb Dunnuck, December 2021

“The 2016 Pym-Rae continues to show well, with a rich, meaty, powerful style as well as loads of chocolaty black fruits, tobacco, black olive tapenade, and leather-like aromas and flavors. It's beautiful on the palate, with massive concentration and depth as well as terrific balance. This gorgeous, deep, opulent beauty is going to benefit from another 4-6 years of bottle age and live for 3-4 decades.”

2019 Pym-Rae Red Blend

Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, December 2023

“Impressively ripe and concentrated, it offers scents of cassis, violet and hints of dark chocolate on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-smooth, framed by dusty tannins on the long, focused finish. Yes, it's somewhat Bordeaux-like in shape, but it's fully ripe, with black cherries emerging on the finish, along with the slightest touch of alcoholic warmth.”

2018 M. Chapoutier Chante-Alouette Blanc

Matt Walls, Decanter, November 2023

“Lovely nose, like a freshly cut mango, with subtle tobacco and cigar notes behind. Full bodied, rich and powerful, displaying a touch of oatmeal and noticeable oak spice inlaid in the long finish. Already complex and showing development, this is deliciously ripe and approachable. Unlikely to be the longest-living Chante-Alouette, but it's enjoyably succulent and fleshy.”

2019 M. Chapoutier Chante-Alouette Blanc

Matt Walls, Decanter, November 2023

“Open and pronounced, showing rich, ripe mango and honeysuckle. Very full bodied, with a lovely, smooth, silky and juicy mouthfeel. The acidity is tangy and present, and helps to balance the quite potent alcohol, which adds further weight and intensity. Remarkable concentration and depth, very powerful. Richer than a classic year, with great intensity.”

2020 M. Chapoutier Chante-Alouette Blanc

Matt Walls, Decanter, November 2023

“Appealingly ripe, primarily apricot fruit with mango notes. Full bodied but not fat, with good weight, presence, mango-like acidity and deft oak work helping to underpin the rich fruit. Tangy, spicy finish of impressive length, ending with tobacco and cinnamon. An authentic white Hermitage with freshness and grandeur but also drinkability. A very good, classic vintage of this cuvée.”

2019 M by Michael Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon

James Suckling, James Suckling, December 2023

“Aromas of black currants, fresh green bell peppers and violets followed by intense graphite and pencil shaving notes with tobacco leaves, cloves, cedar and underlying gravel minerality Wonderfully structured full-bodied wine with firm yet polished tannins with a bright acid backbone. Very precisely framed. Sound and energetic yet it has a lovely finesse in the mid-palate and finish. A blend of 95% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. Aged for 21 months in 75% new French oak barrels. Give this more time to come around. Try after 2028.”

2020 Colomé Estate Malbec

Christy Canterbury, New Wine Review, December 2023

“This looks opaque at the core, but it also has the tiniest magenta rim at the sides of the glass. Okay. Wow. Now that I have this in my mouth, this is super different. It is very savory, even salty on the attack and through the finish. There’s some good underlying fruit–boysenberries and black currants, but overall, this doesn’t taste fruit-driven. This savory taste makes me think it’s a perfect pairing for dry-aged steak (no, no, no, not wet-aged.) Whatever you pair with it, the tannins here are class act and elegant and the acidity wedges in subtly. So. Darn. Good.”

2020 Colomé El Arenal Malbec

Christy Canterbury, New Wine Review, December 2023

“Raven black at the core then almost neon magenta at the rim, this wine is equally wow-ing on the nose with its exuberantly ripe boysenberries and cassis inflected with crushed graphite and drying flowers. The fruit purity is head-turning. The intense flavors are concentrated but not heavy. In fact, there’s only the lightest touch of glycerol on this full-bodied wine. This is an impressive feat with the high–though well-integrated–alcohol. The solid, minerally finish pops with lifting acidity. This is seamless and already drinking very well. Post-tasting: This is the second vintage of this wine, which was previously blended into the Estate Malbec bottling.”
