Our 2018 Los Carneros Chardonnay is expressive and approachable, showcasing balanced fruit, lingering acidity and rich flavors and aromas of caramelized white pear, fresh fuji and golden delicious apple, apple blossoms and torched crème brulee.

The 2018 vintage was a wonderful reminder of just how special and ideal a Harvest in Napa Valley can be.  The near-perfect growing season started later than previous years and saw ideal weather conditions until the last fruit was resting safely under the watchful eyes of winemaking teams all over the Valley.  The challenging heat and drizzly summer days of the 2017 growing season became just a memory as the beautifully set clusters of 2018 fruit ripened evenly in the cool mornings and warm afternoons.  Our Chardonnay grapes are sourced predominantly from the cool, breezy, sun-drenched, western-facing slopes of Los Carneros, and the 2018 Vintage saw us harvest many of our blocks the week of September 24th. The cool, even ripening season delayed harvest in most regions by a full two weeks.

With an almost perfect fruit set in the spring and cool moderate summer temperatures that led in to fall, the 2018 season yielded perfectly ripened Chardonnay.  This wine underwent simultaneous alcoholic and malolactic barrel fermentation, followed by 7 months sur lie in 33% new French oak.

Tasting Notes

With the cooling Carneros breezes providing relief from the record breaking heat events of August and September we were able to perfectly ripen our Chardonnay. This wine underwent simultaneous alcoholic and malolactic barrel fermentation, followed by 10 months sur lie in 33% new French oak. Our 2017 Los Carneros Chardonnay is expressive and approachable; showcasing balanced fruit, lingering acidity and rich flavors and aromas of caramelized white pear, fresh fuji and golden delicious apple, apple blossoms and torched crème bruleé.

From record-breaking heat to drizzly summer days, the 2017 growing season was challenging for winemakers. Throughout the valley, temperatures soared well over 100 degrees for multiple days in late August and early September causing a flurry of activity in the vineyards and wineries. We source our Chardonnay grapes from the cooler Napa and Sonoma regions within Los Carneros . The 2017 Vintage saw us harvest our first Chardonnay on September 9 and our last fruit on September 24 across the sweeping Carneros western slopes. We count ourselves very lucky to have safely completed our Chardonnay Harvest well ahead of the October fires.

Tasting Notes

Thanks to a wonderful growing season which provided perfectly ripened grapes, Tony Coltrin was able to make an expressive, approachable and fruit forward Chardonnay. Having undergone simultaneous alcoholic and malolactic barrel fermentation, spending 9 months sur lie in 33% new French oak, our 2016 Los Carneros Chardonnay showcases balanced fruit, lingering acidity and rich flavors and aromas of caramelized white pear, fresh fuji and golden delicious apple, apple blossoms and torched crème bruleé.

Another year of drought conditions and a continued warm, dry winter season, resulted in an early bud break. Drought coupled with a cool Spring and long flowering period lead to uneven fruit set, smaller grape clusters and another year of lighter than usual crop. Temperatures throughout the growing season were a bit of a rollercoaster of hot and cold, forcing the fruit to ripen in waves. Despite the weather and light crop, we were able to harvest a crop offering beautiful rich character. We completed harvest before the October rains, which made the Napa Valley wetter than we’ve seen in a decade.
