Luke Columbia Valley Syrah

Wahluke Slope AVA, Washington

I heard stories about him for years, saw him in the flesh a few times, and spoke to him only once. The true depth of a man’s character is often unknowable, but even one conversation was enough to convince me that Luke was an imitation of no one. He revealed him-self slowly, like a freed wind emerging from the shadow of a mountain. Seemingly ordinary at first, but undeniably complex. Bold and determined, but unabashedly generous.

Tasting Notes

Named after the Whaluke Slope, LUKE Syrah is a full-bodied red packed with profound color, concentration of flavors and velvet elegance. The wine opens up rich and bold, suggesting white pepper, licorice, dark chocolate, and spice followed by blackberry, blueberry, and candied fruits. A lengthy finish highlights the ripeness and complexity of the wine.

"Blackberries and vanilla duel for aromatic supremacy with bacon fat and violets: there are no losers in this battle. Rich, concentrated flavors of cassis and bittersweet dark chocolate join bits of crushed rock and cinnamon. The acidity is restrained, but the opulent mouthfeel espouses hedonism."

"Editor's Choice. Fruit for this wine comes principally from Stone Tree, Clifton Hill and Frenchman Hill vineyards. The aromas are fairly quiet, showing a sleek mix of pomegranate, grilled herb, smoke and bacon fat. The palate brings creamy flavors of smoked ham and olive—an intriguing mix. There's a lot of richness to be had, along with silky soft flavors."

"Appealing aromas of coffee, assorted dried herbs and whiffs of smoked meat are followed by a soft, sultry palate, full of plum flavors that glide on the finish. The tannins show a little tackiness at present, revealing the wine's youth. Give it a short decant to see it deliver."
