L'Avenir Single Block Pinotage

L’Avenir Single Block Pinotage, Stellenbosch

This collector's item is made from a selection of only the finest barrels produced from L'Avenir's famed Block 2 Pinotage vineyard.  Produced in the honour of L'Avenir's former winemaker and pioneer of Stellenbosch Pinotage, Francois Naude, this wine is L'Avenir's flagship and the pinnacle of modern, Stellenbosch Pinotage.

Tasting Notes

Nose:  A symphony of violets, potpourri, dried cranberries and hints of dark chocolate.  Fresh and inviting, yet complex, layered and intriguing.
Palate:  Well-judged oak, fruit purity and textured richness are hallmarks of this world class wine.  The palate is generous and complex, with fresh cherries and a subtle, sweet spiciness that distinguishes fine Stellenbosch Pinotage.

A fine choice for Peking duck or ostrich fillet with a cranberry reduction.

Regarded as a top Stellenbosch red wine vintage.  Berry size was small, resulting in concentrated flavours and bold, fruity wines.  The vintage is characterised by generous and characterful and smooth wines, that are showing great complexity and smoothness at a younger age.

After being hand-sorted, destemmed and only lightly crushed, the grapes remained in a tank for three days of cool maceration, before fermentation started through natural yeasts.  Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, as well as French oak barrels.  The wine was matured in 300 litre French oak barrels of which about 15% were new.  Only the best 14 barrels were selected for the final blend.

An exclusive geological vein comprising weathered shale has consistently yielded the best quality Pinotage at L'Avenir.  Block 2 is situated at the core of this special site, on the highest point of L'Avenir Hill.  The first single vineyard wine from Blcok 2 was produced in 2004.  This was the start of one of the most iconic South African wines.
Planting year:  1994
Altitude: 225m
Number of vines:  4231
Trellising system:  Trellised bush vines
Soil type:  Glenrosa

Estate-grapes (L'Avenir) Stellenbosch – Glenrosa type (decomposed shale with clay underneath). 10.49hectare of Pinotage is planted with the oldest vines established in 1985, to the most recent planting in 2007. All vines are trellised after changing our philosophy in trellising all bush vines to low trellised system. Supplementary irrigation is applied during the warmer summer months when the soil water table is parched. There are 8 blocks of Pinotage situated on various aspects of the large hill that comprises L'Avenir, allowing certain blocks to be isolated for specific vinification styles and premium wines. We selected Block 2 (1.2 hectare) as single vineyard selection for the Single Block Pinotage wine. It is also dry land vineyards. The Indian Ocean is less than 20km away, and gentle afternoon sea breezes drift over the farm and exert a cooling influence against the late afternoon Cape sun.

    Wine Advocate, March 2020

"Red and black-fruited on the nose, the 2017 Single Block Pinotage has aromas of spicy tobacco, leather, dark plum skin and blackberry essence. In the mouth, the wine is slightly drying with spicy lingering tannins that grip the mid-palate. Medium-bodied, the wine turns slightly tart and focused on the palate with a red fruit essence and soft, dried herbs on the lingering finish. This is a tasty wine."
