Bibi Graetz Bugia

Toscana IGT, Tuscany

2017 has been a very dry vintage in mainland Tuscany, only few days of rain during the vegetative development in spring and almost none during summer. Those conditions are the normality on the island of Giglio, the vines are prepared and the deep roots grants sufficient access to the resources. 2017 tends to be considered a very nice vintage for the Island of Giglio especially for the concentration and the structure.

Tasting Notes

“I love the expression of terroir coming out from this wine. I can feel the minerality of the granite soil of the island, the salt of the sea and the dryness of the wind. This wine is the island in a bottle.” --Bibi Graetz

After a soft pressing at low temperature the juice is decanted for few hours before the fermentation. The process mainly conducted in stainless steel tanks, with a small percentage, less than 20% on 225l barriques. After the fermentation the wines are aged for extra 6 months before the bottling.

Bugia is the selection of the 8 ha of vineyards from the island of Giglio. The grapes are selected manually in the vineyards and handpicked.

    Wine Advocate, September 2018

"The 2017 Bugia Isola del Giglio is a pure expression of Ansonica from 80-year-old vines facing the azure sea on Giglio island off the coast of Tuscany. The wine is made in a very simple and straightforward style: it is fermented in steel vat and released young to capture that freshness and purity. Bugia (named after an old farmer who once tended to this vineyard) offers a very authentic taste of a unique island territory. The bouquet evokes salty sea sensations with brimstone and sandy beach. Although Ansonica is not a particularly fragrant grape variety, you are treated to buoyant tones of white melon and summer peach in this sunny vintage. The advanced age of the vines makes a lasting impression on the palate, thanks to the richness of its mid-weight palate. This is a special Italian wine that tastes great straight out of the gate thanks to its primary freshness. It will surely reward even more complexity to those who have the patience to wait."
