André Brunel Domaine Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire

AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône

To celebrate the 100 years of planting the most beautiful plot in the Domaine, located in the eponymous sector of Farguerol, in 1989 Lucien and André decided to create a special cuvée issued specifically from this plot which became the Cuvée Centenaire. The Cuvée Centenaire is only produced during exceptional vintages – such is the case with 2007, 2010, and with this 2015 – when the can most fully express the quintessence of the Grenache.

Tasting Notes

Rich and expressive on the nose with black currant and blackberry along with hints of leather suggest a complex wine which has gracefully aged over time. These aromas, accompanied by perfectly mellow tannins, give way to roundness in the mouthfeel followed by an impressively long finish.

85% Grenache, 15%, Mourvèdre

The soil and subsoil in this plot do not contain much limestone. However, bluish-toned, compacted graphite clay, on both the surface and below the surface layer, give this wine its mineral properties. The vineyard's positioning gives the vines perfect exposure to sunshine and the frequent and turbulent Mistral winds contribute to the concentration of sugar in the grapes. This unique terroir cultivates a wine rich in aromas and structure for a truly complex cuvée.

An exceptional fine cuvée with an incomparably long finish in the mouth and only produced during great vintages.

Tasting Notes

A rich and expressive nose: blackcurrants, blackberries… Powerful and roundness in the mouth: an impressively long finish in the mouth, the tannins are perfectly mellow. There are dominant aromas of undergrowth and leather. Complex aromas up until then uniquely reserved to wine having aged for a long period of time, are already present.

Red meat, game or to enjoy quite simply alone for the sheer pleasure of drinking a great wine.

The soil and subsoil don’t have much limestone but there is a lot of clay on both the surface and deep down in the ground. This blue and compact clay gives the wine its mineral property (graphite). Its exposure gives the vines perfect sunshine and the often-blowing violent Mistral contributes to the concentration of sugar and aromas which are used to make this cuvée.

"Unlike many luxury cuvées, Les Cailloux's 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire is not simply an example of taking the best fruit from the estate and throwing new oak at it. It is from the estate's oldest Grenache vines, with a small dose of Syrah added for complexity and aging potential, but it's not forced or overextracted in any way, showing beautiful notes of cherries, stone fruit and a touch of stem inclusion. It's full-bodied and creamy, but with a fresh, silky finish that echoes with cranberries. Although a powerful wine, it's more about elegance than sheer brawn."

"Ripe and very solid, with a core of warm fig, fruitcake, mulled plum and roasted alder notes rolled together, carried by a lively mineral streak and backed by sanguine, bergamot and savory flashes on the finish. This has lots of character, showing excellent range and cut through the finish. Best from 2020 through 2040. 50 cases imported."

"This beauty is just hitting its stride now, with a still-robust structure that is starting to show more velvety nuance while melding with the core of dark currant preserve, warmed fig and steeped plum flavors. Lots of cocoa and tobacco notes form the backdrop, and there’s a long, smoldering feel to the finish. Another classic from a classic vintage. Best from 2017 through 2035. From France.—J.M."

"Vivid red color. Seductive, highly expressive aromas of raspberry, anise, Asian spices, smoky minerals and potpourri. Juicy, sweet and palate-staining, with vibrant red and dark berry flavors and superb clarity and back-end florality. The extremely long finish leaves sweet floral pastille and raspberry notes behind. This is one of the most seductive wines of the vintage and is already showing a lot of complexity."
