André Brunel Domaine Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône

A great Rhône Valley white wine which merges the terroir energy and the originality of the Roussanne.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 vintage, with its historical low yield but exceptional quality, allowed the Roussanne to fully express itself. Elegance, finesse, and length are the main characteristics of this unique vintage and wine. Floral and fruity aromas with hints of honey layered over notes of mineral undertones followed by a smooth viscosity in the finish, this wine will surprise with its complexity and the evolution of the aromas throughout the tasting.

White meats and fish. Light sauces. Goat cheese.

The grapes are picked early in the morning to avoid exposing them to the heat and, to limit contact with oxygen, they are pressed immediately and the juice is put into concrete vats to macerate. No malolactic fermentation. Aging for 6 months on the lees in concrete vats. No barrel aging. This wine will be fully mature after a minimum of 5 years of aging.

80% Roussanne, 20% Grenache

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée is made using two plots from the Domaine – each one growing only one type of grape. Les Serres only grows Roussanne and Le Revès only grows Grenache Blanc. Although the Roussanne isn’t typical for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape white, it brings aromatics, finesse, and elegance while the Grenache Blanc brings structure and energy. This terroir, full of round pebbles, is characteristic of the appellation and bestows an all-important aging ability to this white wine, enabling it to express its full potential in several years.

"The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc shows how much can be accomplished without much in the way of winemaking. Vinified and aged entirely in concrete, this blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc has no bells and whistles, yet it delivers round, mouth-filling citrus flavors, a wonderfully silky, layered texture and a long, rich finish. It should continue to drink well for several years."

"Racy and engaging, with a mix of fennel, chamomile and verbena notes giving this cut and lift from the start, while the core of yellow apple, melon and mirabelle plum fruit fills in behind. Shows lots of energy and range. Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. Best from 2019 through 2024. 120 cases imported."

"Unusual for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Brunel's white is 80% Roussanne (the other 20% is Grenache Blanc). It's a lush, fruit-forward style, with ripe pineapple and peach elements that nonetheless show surprising lift and freshness on the long finish. Drink now."

"A terrific white that delivers on all accounts, Brunel’s 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc is a Roussanne-dominated blend that includes 20% Grenache Blanc. It comes all from the southern part of the appellation, in the lieu-dit of Les Serres. Aged in concrete tanks, it has a ripe, rounded, beautifully textured style to go with lots of ripe peach and tropical fruit aromas and flavors. I love its texture and it has first rate purity, as well. This is a classic Châteauneuf du Pape white that will shine on the dinner table over the coming 2-4 years."
