BODEGAS LEDA"Site by Site, Seeking true expression of the tierra of Tempranillo" Bodegas Leda strives to exhibit the potential of Spain’s Tierra de Castilla y León by crafting wine from vineyard plots throughout the region that best express the characteristics of this ancient land. Labeling the wine outside of the D.O. Ribera del Duero appellation allows the freedom to source the best quality fruit year after year. This philosophy behind Leda originated with one of the best European winemakers, Mariano García, who founded the winery in 1997 and has been involved in many high-profile projects in Spain. García began making wine in Ribera del Duero in 1968, and his family has known the area for generations, giving a great sense of history to every project that he touches. As winemaker at Vega Sicilia for 30 years, he worked with the very best that Ribera del Duero has to offer and has experimented with terroir expression over the last three decades with Mauro (Castilla y León), Aalto (Ribera del Duero), and San Román (Toro). His vision embraces making wines that are unbound by appellation limits, making him influential among winemakers and successful in bringing unknown Spanish winegrowing regions to the world’s attention. Bodegas Leda is now a partnership between the Mariano García family and the Masaveu family, which traces its winemaking history back to the 14th century, and owns three other wineries throughout Spain: Bodegas Fillaboa in the D.O. Rias Baixas, Pagos de Aráiz in the D.O. Navarra, and Bodegas Murua in the D.O.C. Rioja. The day-to-day vineyard activities of Leda are the responsibility of García’s sons, Eduardo and Alberto, who share their father’s mission. The Tempranillo grapes for Leda are sourced from 40 growers throughout the Duero Valley, near the limits of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, with no vineyard plot larger than half a hectare. With this emphasis on old vine Tempranillo from specific chosen sites within Castilla y León, and a combination of traditional and modern methods in viticulture and winemaking, Leda produces genuine wines with a distinct sense of place. Bodegas Leda creates two wines, both 100% Tempranillo, from low-yielding vines. Más de Leda is bottled after 13 months in oak barrels and has a style that is modern, friendly, fresh, and juicy. Fruit for Leda Viñas Viejas is sourced from vines 50- to 100-years-old. The wine is bottled after 36 months in oak. Intense, mineral, opulent, and elegant, it expresses the full potential of old vines from the Duero Valley.
