Accolades

As white wine continually grows in popularity, critics have begun to focus more on lesser known varietals such as Grüner Veltliner, a food-friendly white to pair with your favorite recipes.

  • Charlotte Observer online, recommends 2007 Laurenz und Sophie Singing Gruner Veltliner, describing the wine as "an elegant Riesling with crisp acids and citrus flavors and aromas, but with an interesting peppery and herbal undertone..." (September 22, 2009)
  • Great news—the 2007 Laurenz V Charming received 90 pts in the Wine Spectator, "A powerful, well-defined Grüner, with
concentrated fruit flavors nectarine, apple,Meyer lemon and peach that linger on thewhite pepper filled finish." (February 28, 2009)
  • The Nov/Dec ’08 issue of Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar featured a report on Austria and included the following:
    2006 Laurenz V Charming Gruner Veltliner  88
    2005 Laurenz V Charming Gruner Veltliner  89
  • Michael Dresser of the Baltimore Sun (syndicated column), has chosen the 2007 Laurenz und Sophie Singing Gruner Veltliner as the “Wine Find.”
-- Gruner Veltliner is one of the great but little-known white-wine grapes. Its cultivation is almost entirely confined to Austria, one of the great but little-known wine countries. This dry, steely wine combines impressive tensile strength with deep flavors of pear, cherry, minerals, herbs and a hint of white pepper. (Sept 3, 2008)
  • Gourmet Magazine features Grüner Veltliner's with recipe's and a recommendation for the 2006 Laurenz V. Charming Grüner Veltliner, "firm but silky." (August 2008)
  • Wine Spectator reviews the 2006 Laurenz und Sophie Singing Grüner Veltliner (86 pts)
    --
Ripe peach and baked apple flavors fill this balanced and firm-tasting white. Finishes with mineral and spice, with notes of grapefruit. (June 15, 2008)
  • Wine Spectator rates the 2006 Laurenz V. Charming (87 pts) -- This is juicy, showing peach and crunchy apple flavors, with an enticing spicy cut to the minerally notes. Finishes a touch off-dry. Drink now through 2010. –K.M. (May 15, 2008)
  • Austrian wines featured in Wine & Spirits:
-2006 Laurenz V. Charming Gruner Veltliner (90 pts)--Rich and earthy, this shows broad notes of guava and preserved lemon, tightly wound in a finely detailed structure.  The texture is silky and alluring, and the saline mineral notes become more intense the longer it sits in the glass. (April 2008)
  • Jerry Shriver reviews 2005 Laurenz V "Singing'' Gruner Veltliner, on USA Today Cheers column on-line at http://blogs.usatoday.com/cheers/2007/10/song-remains-th.html. "I guess the "Singing'' refers to the slight effervescence in the wine that makes your mouth tingle and your tongue trill or whatever. Anyway, I auditioned the '04 version of this wine last year and enjoyed it quite a bit and am glad to see the successor is consistent. Austrian wines in general are noted for the purity of their fruit and that's the case here -- lots of pristine apple, grapefruit and lime flavors, with a hit of white pepper at the end. Seafood is the obvious partner because the wine's acidity can cut through oiliness and rich sauces." (Posted October 1, 2007)
  • Paul Lukacs, Wine Review Online, posted a great review of the Laurenz V 2005 Charming Grüner Veltliner: "Its a bit precious, but the name here is right on target, as this wine indeed tastes charming. It has Grüner Veltliner's telltale whiff of pepper in the bouquet, mineral-tinged secondary flavors, and plenty of citrus and apple fruit. Most impressively, it is extremely harmonious, and just plain delicious to drink. As the label says, charming. (90 pts)

  • Decanter awarded the Laurenz V 2005 Charming und Sophie Grüner Veltliner four stars and noted, “It’s not the most self-effacing name, but the wine backs up the promise. A Grüner with pure, clean fruit and a hint of honey. The very dry palette is supported by zesty citrus flavors and has a lingering finish.” (July 2006)
  • Also rated in Decanter, the 2004 Charming und Sophie Grüner Veltliner was given three stars and described as having, “Lime nose, reserved. Good acidity combined with considerable richness, ripe but zesty, attractive earthiness.” (2006)
  • The United States Austrian Wine Challenge awarded a Gold Metal Certificate to the 2004 Charming Grüner Veltliner. (2006)
