Medusa

Medusa Winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr. and partners, wife Lydia Mondavi, Patti McKiernan and Geoff Whitman, create single vineyard, old-vine Zinfandels from California’s prime growing regions. Through relationships with local growers, the Medusa owners gained access to up to 80 year-old Zinfandel vineyards, reflecting the varietal’s long history in California.

The current releases hail from four different vineyards: Pig Pen Vineyard from the Deaver Ranch in Amador County; Lovers’ Lane Vineyard in Mendocino; Hoodoo Creek Vineyard in Lake County; and Creekside Vineyard of Bar 49 Ranch in northeastern Napa Valley. A very limited amount of Medusa Old Vine Zinfandel Port is also produced from late harvest grapes from the Creekside and Pig Pen Vineyards.

Gnarled, twisted old Zinfandel vines were the inspiration behind the Medusa logo, named for the snake-haired female figure in Greek mythology.  In Greek Medusa means “guardian” or “protectress,” so the partners hope she will continue to watch over the vineyards so they can continue to make delicious wines, and have fun doing it!
