Mas de l'AbundánciaThe Mas de l'Abundància winery is entrenched in Spanish history, including a rich legacy of quality wine production. Translated as land of the abundant harvest, the winery takes its name from the 15th century when the current vineyard site in Montsant was farmed by monks from the nearby Scala Dei monastery—the first Carthusian monastery founded on the Iberian Peninsula. Owner Jesús del Rio, whose family has grown Garnacha in the region since the 1300s, is a poet and musician as well as a winemaker. He purchased the property in the early 1990s, and first exported wines to the United States in 2006. Today, Jesús and his wife, Marta Luaces, continue to make arguably one of the best wines coming from the D.O. Montsant. Hand selected from the fertile soil of the D.O. Montsant, the wines of Mas de l'Abundància offer intense structure and longevity. They symbolize the fusion of an ancient land with innovative enological practices. Mas de l’Abundància is a succulent and velvety combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Negra and Cariñena. This wine comes from a vineyard located at the base of one of the oldest churches in the Priorat region, where 20- to 80-year-old vines line the hillsides and valley floor. Mas de l'Abundància’s second wine, Fluminis, is a round, complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Negra and Cariñena from the hillside town of Mas Roig. This vineyard’s low-production vines produce grapes of concentrated varietal character, and the resulting wine offers delicious aromas of black currants, fresh strawberries and dark chocolate. Fluminis means of the river in Latin, and recalls the owner’s last name, del Rio. In 2007, Mas de l'Abundància also releases its inaugural 2003 vintage of Cuvée Helena del Rio, a top-tier wine made in limited quantities from the finest grapes of select vintage years.
