Tinto Pesquera Millenium Reserva

DO Ribera del Duero, DO Ribera Del Duero

Tinto Pesquera, the Familia Fernández Rivera flagship property, is known for producing some of the most sought-after Tempranillos in the world, including Millenium Reserva, which is only made in select vintages.  The grapes for Millenium are sourced from the Viña Alta vineyard, where Familia Fernández Rivera planted their first vines at the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s. It is located at an altitude of over 800 metres.

Tasting Notes

APPEARANCE: Clean and bright with a very deep, black cherry color. NOSE: Full with fruit aromatics and subtle, well integrated oak. Lovely harmonious notes of ripe, black fruit, licorice and hints of coffee and spices. PALATE: Full, fleshy and long with a lingering, round tannic structure. A luscious, elegant development on the palate with ripe fruit and roasted coffee beans coming through in the finish. This is a silky, elegant wine that aged well in French oak barrels.

Great with all types of red or white meats. Also with game dishes and above all perfect with roast suckling lamb. It also goes very well with stews and pulses, as well as desserts, such as bitter chocolate or cheesecake.

Alcoholic fermentation of the Millenium Reserva took place between 6-10 days at an average temperature of 20-25°C. The resulting wine was then aged for 24 months in fine grain, 225-French oak barrels with a light-to-medium toast. Barrels were racked four times during the first twelve months and an additional 2-3 times per year during the second and third year of barrel aging. With the Fernández Rivera family dedicated to natural winemaking, all wines they produce are neither filtered nor fined before the bottling. Upon completion of the barrel aging and bottling, the 2015 Millenium Reserva was then aged for an additional 10 months in bottle before it was released to the market.

Tinto Pesquera’s 200 hectares of vineyards lie near the Duero River at close to 2,400 feet in elevation. The vines grow in poor, well-drained soils, composed of sand and gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil, and are naturally irrigated with water from the nearby Duero River. Tinto Pesquera’s vines are located within the province of Valladolid, in the heart of Ribera del Duero, which has hot summers, incredibly cold winters and extreme diurnal temperature differences that create an ideal combination for producing silky and sumptuous Tempranillo wines. Tinto Pesquera’s Millenium Reserva is made from the estate’s highest-elevation and best single vineyard named Viña Alta.

100% Tempranillo Alcohol 14.5%.

Dark cherry red in color with a maroon rim, Tinto Pesquera’s Millenium Reserva is only made in select vintages. Containing a very complex nose, with notes of mixed berries and licorice wrapped in sleek oak, vanilla and roasted coffee, the palate is fine and elegant, with impressive smoothness. A dense, but noticeably fresh-tasting wine, the 2009 Millenium Reserva contains the perfect balance between alcohol, acidity and fruit.

Ideal for accompanying all kinds of red or white meat and roasts. The perfect accompaniment to game dishes and any type of casserole.

Alcoholic fermentation of the Millenium Reserva took place between 6-10 days at an average temperature of 20-25°C. Tasting Notes

Dark cherry red in color with notes of mixed berries and licorice wrapped in sleek oak, vanilla and roasted coffee, the palate is fine and elegant, with impressive smoothness. A dense, but noticeably fresh-tasting wine, the 2008 Millenium Reserva contains the perfect balance between alcohol, acidity and fruit.

2008 was the vintage of extended grape maturation. Winter was much warmer than usual and incredibly arid - the tail end of an acrimonious dry spell that had begun the previous autumn. Spring began in the same fashion, before the welcomed rain fell during April and May, quenching the drought-ridden vineyards with much-needed water. Summer began with light rain in early August and was cooler than usual, allowing for a slower phenolic maturation of the grape clusters. Harvest, which was delayed until October, was performed in ideal conditions thanks to a cool, dry September, prompting the Tinto Pesquera team to produce its fourth vintage of the esteemed Millenium Reserva.

With the Fernández family dedicated to natural winemaking, all wines produced by Alejandro Fernández were neither filtered nor fined before the bottling, which took place on January 17, 2011. Upon completion of the barrel aging and bottling, the 2008 Millenium Reserva was then aged for an additional three years in bottle before it was released to the market.

"This inky garnet-colored wine has a nose of black currant and cocoa powder, with a hint of summer farm stand. Plush tannins and flavors of black cherry, blackberry, mocha, menthol and a tiny touch of saddle leather ply the tongue and gums and linger there for a small eternity"

"This suave red has a juicy, full-bodied profile, with raspberry tart, loamy earth, mountain herb and anise notes mixed with orange peel, tea and sandalwood details. The full tannins are polished and give this structure for the long haul. Drink now through 2036."

"A rich and layered red with lots of ripe fruit, yet reserved, thanks to the smoky and toasted oak. A little old-school now, but I really enjoy the richness and flashy character. Earthy and spicy at the end. Drink now."

"This red shows density and focus, with ripe flavors of plum and currant mingling with savory notes of smoke, leather and mineral. The firm tannins are well-integrated and balanced by blood orange acidity. Fresh, energetic and graceful. Drink now through 2034."

"This aged Reserva from one of Ribera's seminal names is reflective of the vintage, which was cold, rainy and difficult. This smells of mulchy blackberry, coffee and wood smoke. The palate feels clipped and impermeable, while barely ripe flavors of blackened berry fruits are aided by chocolaty oak and tea notes. While this is full in body and dark in flavors, a lot is missing for something of this price."
