2014 was the thirtieth vintage rated as ‘good’ by the D.O.Ca. Rioja’s control board. Favorable weather conditions in spring and summer produced perfect growing conditions for the vines, evidenced by excellent canopy development and plant health towards the end of verasion. Harvest of Palacios Remondo’s white Viura grapes took place on the 2ndof October, when ‘the most intensive harvesting period in Rioja’ is in full swing. During this period in 2014, more than 300 million kg of fruit arrived at the crush pad and the grapes' excellent health prompted optimistic forecasts for the majority of wines. By all accounts it was on track to be a ‘great’ vintage, but poor weather during the second half of harvest resulted in outbreaks of grey rot, causing severe problems for many of Rioja’s red-grape farmers. A careful selection both in the field and at the winery was required in order make sure only the best fruit went into tank for fermentation. Considered to be a ‘good’ year for red wines, curiously, the control board unanimously found the 2014 rosés and whites to be of exceptional quality, most likely due to the fact that the varieties that make up these wines were all harvested first.

Located on the slope of the Yerga Mountain, at an altitude of 1,800 feet, Palacios Remondo’s vineyards are grown at some of the highest points in Rioja. The 28-year-old head-pruned vines are hand-harvested, grown organically, and very narrowly spaced (3,000 plants per HA). Soil is comprised of sediments that stem from the Quaternary Era, consisting of clay and a stony-calcareous subsoil, covered in stones, with excellent drainage. Very low in organic material and with a moderated basic pH, the soil is perfect for growing high quality fruit. By dry-farming and dropping close to 40% of their fruit, the Palacios Remondo team ensures only the highest quality fruit is picked during harvest.

The Palacios Remondo winery history stretches back five generations when the D.O.C. Rioja was first gaining notoriety as one of the premier winemaking regions of the world. José Palacios Remondo, father of renowned winemaker Alvaro Palacios, founded the Palacios Remondo estate in 1945. Alvaro Palacios, born at his family’s winery in Alfaro, became one of Spain’s winemaking super-stars for his successes in Priorat and Bierzo and was recently voted Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year (March, 2015).

The 2013 harvest in Rioja was classified by the D.O.Ca.’s control board as being ‘good’ in comparison to previous years. The estate’s east-south-east facing vineyard received 3,180 hours of sunlight and temperatures reached as low as 3.6° C in the winter and up to 30.7° C in summer. 276 mm of rain fell in 2013, identical to that of 2012, which Alvaro described as being ‘Mediterranean in character,’ due to the marked periods of extreme heat and high temperatures. A vintage with a much smaller production and slightly higher acidity, the 2013 PLÁCET Valtomelloso is a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared up to ten years.

Tasting Notes

Plácet, meaning "consent," is light-gold in color and contains enticing aromas of white pears, sweet spice and 'roble cremoso,' or creamy oak. Full-bodied and well-balanced, with just the right amount of acidity, Palacios Remondo's 2012 Plácet has hints of lemon-meringue pie, freshly cut golden apples and white peaches on the palate.

It is enjoyable both when served alone or with any kind of food.

Winemaker Alvaro Palacios describes the 2012 vintage as being 'Mediterranean in character,' as it was marked by periods of extreme heat and high temperatures. The month of August was the third driest (and summer in general, the fourth hottest) on record since 1961. Irregular rainfall lead to an irregular ripening in the vineyards and non-native varieties, which are the worst suited to this type of weather, suffered the most in Rioja. Traditional varieties fared the best, especially when cared for by vineyard management teams that had the expertise and patience to wait for the late October rains. Alvaro Palacios stated that a delated harvest in his vineyards helped 'round our the phenolic ripeness' of his grapes, resulting in 'concentrated and vigorous wines, that show finesse, elegance and unique sensory nuances, which slowly, sensually and shyly expanded during the process of oak aging.

Hand-picked clusters of Viura were selected first in the field and again on a sorting table at the winery, before being de-stemmed and put into a cold press for a pre-maceration of eight hours. The juice and lees were then fermented in traditional 2,000-liter oval oak vats at very low temperatures. Upon completion of alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine was then aged sur lie for 10 months in the large French oak ovals with a few soft pump-overs and cold stabilized before bottling.

Located on the slope of the Yerga Mountain, at an altitude of 1,800 feet, the Palacios Remondo vineyards are grown at some of the highest points within all of Rioja. The 27-year-old Viura vines are hand-harvested and grown organically, without any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. The soil is compromised of sediments that stem from the Quaternary Era, consisting of clay and a stony-calcareous subsoil that is covered in stones and has excellent drainage. Very low in organic material and with a moderated basic pH, the soil type is perfect for growing high quality fruit. Vines are narrowly spaced, pruned under a double cordon royat style and never irrigated. By green harvesting and dropping close to 40% of their fruit, the Palacios Remondo team ensures that only the highest quality fruit is picked during each harvest, which in 2012 again took place between October 15th and October 25th.

Tasting Notes

Made in a vintage qualified as 'excellent' by the D. O. Ca. Rioja, the 2011 Plácet is full-bodied, with balanced acidity and hints of lemon verbena, thyme, grapefruit rind and orchard fruit on the palate.

2011 was the third consecutive year of drought in Rioja, characterized by extreme winter and summer temperatures and below-average rainfall. The coolest July on record in over a decade, though, thankfully prevented exorbitant evaporation of the small amount of water left in the soil and vines. A warm and sunny August-September allowed the Palacios Remondo team to harvest their Viura grapes at their optimal ripeness. Upon completion of fermentation, Alvaro described his wines as showing signs of "wildness and timidity," properties of the austere weather conditions of 2011. Once in bottle, however these traits had melded into a stunning finished wine that shows "great finesse, elegance and aromatic complexity" - hallmark traits of a great vintage. A year once again deemed "excellent" by the D. O. Ca. Rioja, winemaker Alvaro Palacios feels his wines from the 2011 vintage possess a great Mediterranean character attributed to the land, sun exposure and high temperatures where his grapes are grown.

Hand-picked clusters of Viura were selected, first in the field and again on a sorting table at the winery, before being de-stemmed and put into a cold press for a pre-maceration of eight hours. 2012 Palacios Remondo Plácet Valtomelloso
Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, April 2015

"It's always interesting to see two vintages of the same wine side by side, as I also tasted the 2012 Plácet Valtomelloso, one of the first modern whites from Rioja that went back to the tradition. It is a wine created by the junior Rafael Palacios who now has his own winery focused exclusively on whites in Valdeorras in Galicia. This is a varietal Viura white from a Mediterranean vintage marked by the extreme drought and heat, but saved by late rains in October. The wine is open, aromatic and expressive, with a mixture of yellow fruit, spices and chalky minerality. It is at the same time fresh, voluptuous and charming and seems very Burgundian as it has fresh acidity, minerality, focused flavors and is very pure. Great Plácet. One of the best, if not the best to date. The vines were planted in 1988 and as the vines mature, the wine is more consistent. 2012 will age well; it's harmonious and balanced. The wine matured in 2,000-liter oval oak vats for 11 months before being bottled into 27,800 bottles."

Josh Raynolds, Vinous, December 2015

"Light gold. Fresh pear, orange pith and honey on the pungent nose, accented by a building note of quinine. Dry and nervy on the palate, with vibrant, refreshingly bitter Meyer lemon and pear flavors enlivened by a subtle herbal element. Youthfully taut and focused on the long, chewy finish, which features brisk citrus fruit tones and lingering stoniness."

2011 Palacios Remondo Plácet Valtomelloso
Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, April 2015

"The 2011 Plácet Valromelloso was cropped from the third consecutive dry vintage, a year that was saved by a cool July. It's pure Viura fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in oval-shaped oak vats for 11 months after malolactic. Much more closed and backward than 2012, the 2011 has a more Mediterranean profile with plenty of notes of aromatic herbs. It is quite lush, ripe and has yellow fruit flavors compensated by a chalky, fresh minerality in the finish. An approachable, hedonistic Plácet. 18,000 bottles produced."
