Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Napa Valley, California

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exudes aromas of freshly muddled boysenberries, warm vanilla bean and toasty cardamom. The welcoming notes of this wine offer voluminous and supple aromas accompanied by rich tannins and dark fruits of plum and ripe dark brambly berries. Well balanced, with a soft and layered mouth feel make this wine a simply delicious expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Able to age or ready to enjoy now.

A long and warm growing season allowed the grapes to manifest dark fruits flavors. Infrequent heat spikes softened the traditionally firm and structured tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon. The warm season balanced by night time fog and cool Napa Valley nights, calmed the ripening process and instilled a unique blend of tannin and fruit which inspired a rich background of deep exotic spices.

The grapes are exclusively hand harvested. During fermentation the colors, flavors, textures and aromas are naturally extracted from the skins.  At approximately 14 days, the fermentation is completed and we drain the tanks, remove the skins and then gently press to capture the remaining juice. It is then transferred into small French oak barrels and aged for 18 months.

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Petit Verdot, 7% Petite Sirah, 4.5% Syrah and 1% Zinfandel 6.10 g/l total acidity; 3.74 pH ABV: 14.7% Production: 11,000 Cases

The genesis of Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is in the Michael Mondavi Family Vineyards, nestled along the North-eastern hillsides of Napa Valley high above St Helena. Farmed sustainably and organically, certified Napa Valley Green and Fish Friendly, the vineyards exemplify a generational commitment to responsible farming.

Tasting Notes

Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 18 months aging in French oak (66% new), concentrated the wine’s rich cassis and blackberry cobbler flavors, adding subtle nuances of torched crème brûlée.

A nearly perfect Napa Valley growing season and harvest provided an abundance of quality grapes in 2013. From spring bud break, through flowering, fruit set, and ripening, conditions were ideal. A consistent stretch of warm summer weather, without large heat spikes and with plenty of cool and foggy nights, ripened grapes to perfection.

After the grapes were gently hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the juice fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with an extended post-fermentation maceration that beautifully married flavors and tannins, giving our Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon its lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 18 months aging in French oak (66% new), further concentrated the wine’s rich cassis and blackberry cobbler flavors, adding subtle nuances of torched crème brûlée. Through numerous barrel tastings and blending trials, a final blend that includes Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Petit Verdothelps make this wine accessible today for immediate drinking while still maintaining the Cabernet structure for extended cellaring.

A classic Napa Valley growing season and harvest provided an abundance of quality grapes from which winemakers had to choose this year. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 15 months aging in French oak (66% new), concentrated the wine’s rich cherry, dark berry, and cassis flavors, adding subtle nuances of toasted vanilla and toffee.

Napa Valley’s 2011 growing season started with abundant rainfall extending through June. The rain delayed bud break and flowering and continued to disrupted fruit set. The rainy season was followed by a cool summer that led to slow ripening several weeks behind normal. Ultimately patience prevailed, and by waiting to pick until the grapes had fully matured, we were able to harvest high quality fruit with ripe, rich flavors.

Napa Valley’s 2010 growing season was dramatic, but resulted in excellent quality fruit with great flavor concentration. It began cool and wet, and by early summer winemakers knew harvest would be later than normal. The early vine development was slowed down by a cool summer and then sped up by bursts of heat throughout the valley. Vineyard management was vital in this vintage, and harvest was accomplished not by one picking but by numerous to be sure that the grapes were properly ripened. This harvest had its share of unexpected challenges as most typically do, but the reduced crop resulted in vines yielding berries that showed great expression of their vineyards and rich, concentrated flavors.

2013 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, December 2015

"The 2013 Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. It sells at a very modest $35.00. The wine has a deep ruby/purple color, loads of juicy fruit, a medium to full body (about 14.7% natural alcohol), a lush, heady, accessible mouthfeel. This is a steal, and a sleeper of the vintage, and capable of lasting up to a decade or more."

"This is absolutely delicious in 2012, composed mainly of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon along with 7% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah, 4% Zinfandel and 4% Petit Verdot. It delivers aromas and flavors of fresh blackberries and black cherries woven together with sweet spices, mocha and warm hazelnut which all come together and cascade through the wine. This possesses a lovely plush texture, supported by round tannins that glide through the finish. Today this is very accessible and should continue to show well for the next few years. (Best 2015-2020)."

2011 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Joe D'Angelo, International Wine Report, December 2013

"The 2011 Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon brings aromas of blackberries and cherries along with mocha, spices and leather with hints of fresh cut violets and earthy minerals. It’s well balanced, offering a mouthful of concentrated fruits which lead up to the finish that is filled with dark cherries, chocolate and anise. This is already showing lots of character and looks like it will also evolve nicely over the next 5-10 years. In 2011 there were small amounts of Syrah, Petite Sirah Zinfandel, Petit Verdot and Merlot resulting in a final blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah, 4% Zinfandel, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. 2010 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Antonio Galloni, Vinous, November 2013

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Layers of dark red fruit, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and spices come together in an expressive Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of personality. Dollops of Petite Sirah, Syrah and ZInfandel - not usually seen in Cabernet-based blends - add an intriguing dimension of aromatic complexity and softness for a young wine. I would prefer to drink the 2010 sooner rather than later, while the rich, mouthfilling fruit is on full display, even if the firm 2010 tannins could use another year to soften. Drinking window: 2014 - 2025"

Fruit is the star, filling the mouth with blackberries and black currants, and a smoky coating of oak. With a dry finish, it’s drinking very well now, and will soften through 2018."
