Château Beaulieu Cuvée Alexandre

Provence

Château Beaulieu is the largest estate in the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation with a history that is closely linked to that of Provence. First built as a stronghold by Henri III in 1576, Château Beaulieu belonged for centuries to the Counts of Provence and a succession of the grandest families in the region have put their hearts into preserving this regional treasure.

Tasting Notes

The flagship rosé, Cuvée Alexandre, is born of the estate's distinct volcanic terroir. With its beautiful light peach hue, the Cuvée Alexandre has a beautiful presence in the glass. Red-currant notes dominate the nose. The palate is finely balanced with an enticing acid-driven freshness that envelops its strawberry and guava notes and the solid-driven minerality, all leading to a persistent yet delicate finish.

Perfect with seafood, red mullet, or Asian fare like teriyaki chicken skewers. Also an excellent apterif.

Grapes are harvested at night to preserve pristine quality. De-stemming and direct pressing follows (2-3 hours) with the wine being fermented at low temperatures to preserve color and aromatics.

Nestled in the heart of Provence and within the region’s only volcano, Trevaresse, the estate lies just a few miles away from Aix-en-Provence and sits at a high altitude of 1,200 feet. With 432 acres of vines, Château Beaulieu is the largest estate in AOP Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence. The volcanic site provides an incredible diversity of clay and limestone soils, this, coupled with the relatively inland location, lends to rosés that retain their vibrancy longer than is typical of the region.

Varietals: Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon

Beautiful lychee in color, the nose expresses delicate white flowers while the palate is elegant and fresh with light hints of papaya.  This is a beautifully balanced wine with a subtle finish.

The vineyard is composed of 140 hectares of the following grape varieties: Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault for the rosé and red wines and Cabernet-Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Rolle and Sémillon for the white wines. Aside from the vines dedicated to the rosé production and 8 ha dedicated to Villa Baulieu wines, other crops grow on this land: almond trees, truffle oaks and agroforestery. The location faces the renowned Provencal region of the Lubéron, overlooks the Durance valley, and the Roque d'Anthéron, and offers a perfectly diversified ”terroir” well-suited to vine growing.

"Strong minerality from volcanic soil shows in this tightly textured wine. Along with tanginess, the wine has intensity, spice, red fruits that are still developing and the possibilty for some aging. Drink from late 2021."

"The 2020 Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rose Cuvée Alexandre includes an appreciable Cabernet Sauvignon component (27%), while the majority of the blend is Grenache (52%) and the balance is Cinsault (21%). It's still a pale-hued rosé but includes some leafy overtones to the redcurrant, melon and citrus fruit and an undercurrent of crushed stone. It's medium-bodied on the palate, crisp and refreshing, with a long, mouthwatering finish."

"Cantaloupe and peach flavors are interwoven with jicama, heather and mineral notes in this charming rosé, with white tea and herb details gliding into the finish. Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Rolle and Sémillon. Drink now. 25,000 cases made, 2,200 cases imported"

"Grenache and Cinsault dominate this wine. Rich structure comes from the intense acidity, light tannin edge and full, red-fruit flavors. Still young, the wine will be better from late 2020"

"The 2019 Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rose Cuvée Alexandre is quite austere, giving up little more than struck flint on the nose, and following that with lemon and grapefruit flavors. It's light to medium-bodied, focused and crisp, still flinty and ungenerous on the finish. Fans of so-called minerally wines—the winery says this reflects the volcanic terroir—will enjoy this more than I did."
