VINTAGE Winemaker Xavier Capafons has characterized the 2007 harvest as being one of tough climatic conditions and boundless natural concentration. Following a long, cold winter and one of the wettest Aprils on record, rapid bud break exploded on the estate’s tiny head-pruned vines during the first week of May. The end of May through July had cooler-than-normal temperatures for the fiery D.O.Q. Priorat, and especially cool evenings. This strong temperature contrast between day and night prolonged the ripening of the grapes and verasion didn’t begin until mid-July, almost a month later than normal. The extreme heat wave that hit Catalunya towards the end of August led to rapid grape desiccation, a major problem for the D.O.Q. Priorat since many of the clusters were still green. In order to obtain a good phenolic extraction from their grape skins, the Capafons’ viticultural team waited almost a month later than usual to pick their fruit, ensuring their small 2007 harvest would be void of the harsh green tannins that accompany under-ripe clusters. Harvest ended on October 30th and the wine that resulted from the 2007 vintage is intensely aromatic and full-bodied, with mature tannins.
VINEYARDS Located at an elevation of 430 meters above sea level, the Mas de l'Amoros property is located directly across from Capafons-Osso's famous Mas de Masos vineyard. The vines at this property are grown organically and were planted in the traditional head-pruned method, where they are trained very close to the ground in order to decrease production. With very tight spacing and no irrigation, the stressed vines ensure great grape quality with very high natural concentration. Finca Mas de l'Amoros in Falset, Priorat, Spain
WINEMAKERS NOTES 'Sirsell,' the Catalan word for a grapevine tendril, is a smooth, single-vineyard Priorat wine produced from Capafons-Osso's Mas de l'Amoros property. The grape varieties grown in the vineyard, whose name translates as 'Lovers' Lane,' are Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine possesses a dark ruby color with aromas of ripe blackberries, Mediterranean herbs and sweet spice. Lively and fruit-forward, this wine is also surprisingly round with mature tannins and a very long finish.
